Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Cabrera-Torres.
Hi Jennifer, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I like to think my story is one of determination and resilience motivated through my faith. I began as a paralegal for 15 years before venturing into the challenging realm of law. My journey has been marked by triumphs and tribulations as a woman overcoming adversity.
Life threw a curveball when my father was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s during my high school years. Despite the hardships, his fervent wish for me to become the lawyer I aspired to be remained a guiding force.
The struggle intensified as I embarked on the LSAT journey. The weight of grief hung heavy as my father passed away mere days after my graduation. In spite of the sorrow and delay that came along with it, I eventually conquered the LSATs and secured a surprising scholarship that propelled me into law school.
Amidst the rigors of law school, life took another unexpected turn. I became pregnant during the global pandemic and law school, a challenge that tested my resolve. Undeterred, I faced final exams at 40 weeks pregnant, determined to graduate with my class. It was a testament to the strength that emerged from the intersection of motherhood and academia… and well, now I understand the saying that mothers are the most efficient people, ha!
During my first year of law school, my husband and I supported a friend in starting his own firm. I juggled this commitment alongside my studies, later working for him full-time until I took the bar. Passing the bar was not just a personal triumph; it led to an unexpected offer of partnership, an honor I embraced with immense gratitude.
The legal landscape, dominated by men, posed unique challenges for a Latina like myself. The statistics reflected a stark reality—Latinas in law constituted approximately a mere 2% of the profession. However, armed with my faith and the words of my father echoing in my heart, I pressed on, determined to shatter the glass ceilings that sought to confine me.
My journey from paralegal to partner is woven with threads of determination, faith, and the enduring influence of a father’s dreams. In a world where adversity sought to define me, I emerged as a testament to the strength of intersecting identity and ambition, not just as a lawyer.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Is it ever a smooth road? Ha!
My journey to becoming a lawyer has been marked by significant challenges. Losing my father just days after college graduation added an emotional burden. Navigating law school while pregnant and then returning to complete school with a three-month-old required immense resilience. Balancing motherhood and the demands of the bar exam posed additional difficulties. I even considered delaying my aspirations to prioritize motherhood. However, I wouldn’t alter a thing because these challenges have profoundly molded me, and I am convinced that if I overcame them, anyone else can too.
