Today we’d like to introduce you to Justin Harris
Hi Justin, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Like many young people, my professional journey began in entry-level positions within the food industry. I worked as a cook, dishwasher, and busser, while also taking on physically demanding summer jobs, like digging footings for houses. Raised by a single mother, I witnessed firsthand the struggles of overcoming generational poverty. Despite these challenges, I graduated high school and immediately entered the workforce at the world’s largest food-service packaging manufacturer. My first roles involved reworking damaged materials, packing boxes, and operating lift trucks.
Over time, different managers noticed what they called my “unrealized potential” and encouraged me to acquire new skills through training and certifications. This was a pivotal moment, as I began to understand the importance of professional development. Over the course of 20 years, I climbed the supply chain ladder, gaining experience in inventory, quality control, leadership, and management. As my career grew, so did my personal growth, especially as I found myself surrounded by successful, business-savvy individuals. This exposure inspired me to learn about investing and financial responsibility, leading me to pursue various investment ventures.
However, as I reached the peak of my management career, averaging 80-hour workweeks and traveling extensively for the company, I faced a life-changing decision. With a growing family, time became more precious, and I realized that while the financial rewards were significant, I longed for more control over my time. The entrepreneurial spirit within me had always been present, and it was time to act on it.
I had always been surrounded by tradesmen throughout my life—uncles, extended family, and friends—who worked in various trades, which sparked my own interest in the field. Drawing from this exposure, as well as my background in construction and my extensive experience in management and quality control, I decided to enter the home inspection business. I began obtaining an education in building science and knowledge of the trades, all while still working full-time—a journey that was exhausting but incredibly rewarding. In 2021, I founded Charming Home Inspections, and as the business grew, I was able to transition fully into running my own company, marking the beginning of this exciting new chapter.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
No road is ever smooth, and nothing—absolutely nothing—is easy. The journey has been filled with challenges, both mental and physical. There were financial hardships, long hours, and moments of doubt. Balancing the demands of supporting a family, going to school, and working full-time was brutal at times. It was exhausting, and there were many days when I questioned if I could keep going. However, it’s in these struggles, in the trenches, where true character is built. Each challenge taught me resilience, perseverance, and the importance of pushing through even when the path ahead seemed impossible. Those tough moments are what shaped me into the person I am today.

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
My view on risk-taking is that risk is a part of every day. The moment you wake up and step into the world, you’re taking risks. It’s not just about making bold, dramatic decisions—it’s about understanding that risk is a constant in life. My advice when it comes to risk-taking is to assess your situation carefully. Gather as much factual data as possible, weigh your options, and then make a decision. Once you make that choice, own it wear it. What I mean by “wearing your decision” is taking full accountability for the outcomes, whether good or bad. I’ve certainly taken risks and made poor decisions in the past, but I’ve learned from each one. Those experiences, even the failures, are what build character.
The truth is, to grow, you have to take risks. Failure is part of the process, but it’s how you learn and evolve. Interestingly, I think people who choose to play it safe and procrastinate—avoiding risk altogether—are actually the biggest risk-takers of all. By refusing to change or take action, they give up the one thing we can never get back: time. Yesterday is gone, and not taking risks means sacrificing precious time that could have been spent growing, learning, or pursuing something meaningful. In my view, not taking a chance is the riskiest decision of all.
