Today, we’d like to introduce you to Kayla Kemp.
Hi Kayla, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I basically grew up in a salon being that I had family members who were cosmetologists. At age 13, I wanted my hair done, but my mom couldn’t take me to the African shop to get it done, so I decided to teach myself how to do box braids. I started taking clients for braids in 9th grade, but it was never anything serious. I ended up developing an allergy to braiding hair, so I stopped taking clients for braids.
I didn’t want to stop doing hair, so I began teaching myself how to sew, make wigs, and install wigs. I took my first client for a lace install in March of 2019. I continued practicing on myself and friends and family members until I felt comfortable doing clients I rebranded my hair business and started The NyChé Touch in June 2020.
I left to attend college at Albany State University in August and found myself doing hair more than going to my classes, so I dropped out of college after finishing the first year in May 2021 and decided to attend cosmetology school in August 2021 instead, and I finish in December 2022 got my license and haven’t stopped since
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
No, this journey has been nowhere near easy.
Especially when you’re doing it all alone with no support system or financial help. I’ve had to encounter sleepless nights, making absolutely no profit for years straight, back-to-back burnout, living bill to bill, constant doubt, and always wanting to give up. But overall it’s worth it once you start seeing the clientele actually come in.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about The Nyche Touch?
The Nyche Touch is a hair salon. I provide several services from wig installs, lace sewins, traditional sewins, Quick weaves, Faux locs, Loc retwists, and Natural Hair care. I specialize in Lace Installs and Faux Locs. What sets me apart from others is quality!
Each client receives a unique experience, and I ensure that at the end of the day, my clients are happy with the service they receive. Brand wise I’m most proud of seeing the growth in not only myself as a stylist but my brand overall.
What changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
In the next 5-10 years, I see myself becoming a beauty mogul! I have my salon storefront to spread my knowledge and am able to travel to service women and men all over the globe.
