Community Highlights: Meet Melissa Brown of A Place to Grow Counseling and Consulting Services LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Brown.

Hi Melissa , we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My Journey into the counseling field came from a deep desire to create the kind of space I didn’t always see or have growing up. A space where hard conversations are allowed and experiences validated. I was drawn to working with children because I understand how difficult it can be to find the words when you are young and how poweful it is when someone takes the time to listen.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
My journey has been meaningful, but definitely has had it challenges. As a woman of color and an immigrant, there were times when I felt unseen and underestimated. Early iin my career I didn’t always feel confident advocating for myself, whether that was around boundaries, compensation, or my clinical instincts. I often second guessed myself even when I knew my work was solid. Eventually that confidence came with time, mentorship, and lived experience.
Emotionally, this work is heavy. Holding space for my clients and their families thorough trauma, loss, and systemic barriers takes a toll. While my practice offers flexibility and automony, it also comes with uncertainty and isolation. Despite all of that, every challenge or struggle has shaped who I am.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about A Place to Grow Counseling and Consulting Services LLC ?
A Place to Grow Counseling and Consulting Services is a welcoming and affirming practice that supports social-emotional development and self-awareness, creating space for individuals and families to feel seen, supported, and empowered.

We specialize in play therapy, ADHD and executive functioning assessments, parent coaching. A big part of my work is helping parents better understand their child, not just the diagnosis or behavior, but the “why” behind so they can advocate with confidence and compassion for their child. I also offer clinical supervision for licensure and play therapy supervision.

What really sets my practice apart is how intentional and relational the work is. I don’t believe in one-size-fits all therapy. Every child, family, and young person brings their own story, culture, and strengths into the room, and my role is to meet them where they are. My background as an immigrant and woman of color deeply informs how I show up, attuned, curious, and authenic. I also value collaboration, whether that’s working closely with parents, schools, or other professionals to support the whole child.

Brand-wise, what I’m most proud of is that everything I offer aligns with my values. From my therapy services to my book Emotion in Motion (English and Spanish version), my goal has always been to make therapy accessible, practical, and meaningful beyond the therapy room.

What I want readers to know is that A Place to Grow is exactly what it sounds like. It’s a safe space where you don’t have to have it all figured out to receive support. Whether seeking therapy, an assessment, guidance navigating the school system, or tools to support their child at home, my practice is built to walk alongside them honoring their journey and helping them move forward with clarity and confidence using the therapeutic powers of play.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
The most important lesson I’ve learned is that growth doesn’t come from having everything figured out. It comes from showing up consistently and staying aligned with your values.
