Today we’d like to introduce you to Monica Odelus.
Monica, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I earned my Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Chamberlain University in 2016, and shortly after, I began working in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). I spent seven years there, caring for some of the most vulnerable patients and their families during incredibly emotional and often uncertain times. While the clinical aspect of caring for newborns was deeply rewarding, what stood out most to me was the connection I built with the mothers. Many of them were navigating unexpected circumstances, and I naturally found myself becoming a source of emotional support, reassurance, and guidance during one of the most challenging periods of their lives.
Those experiences had a lasting impact on me. I began to recognize the critical need for mental health support, particularly for women facing overwhelming transitions into motherhood. That realization inspired me to take the next step in my career and pursue becoming a psychiatric nurse practitioner.
Today, I’m driven by a passion for supporting mental health with the same compassion and attentiveness that guided me in the NICU. My journey has allowed me to blend both clinical care and emotional support, and I’m grateful to be in a position where I can help individuals feel seen, heard, and empowered as they navigate their own stories.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My path into healthcare wasn’t linear, but every step shaped where I am today. I initially earned my Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and began my career working as a bookkeeper. While I valued that experience, I found myself wanting something more meaningful—work that allowed me to connect with people and make a tangible difference in their lives. That realization led me back to school in 2013 to pursue nursing.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Odelus Wellness Psychiatry?
My work is centered around providing compassionate, personalized mental health care with a strong focus on meeting people where they are in their journey. As a psychiatric nurse practitioner, I specialize in treating mood and anxiety disorders, with a particular passion for supporting women navigating life transitions especially those related to motherhood, postpartum challenges, and unexpected changes that can feel overwhelming or isolating.
What sets my practice apart is the balance between clinical expertise and genuine human connection. My background in the NICU deeply shaped how I approach care, I don’t just treat symptoms, I take the time to understand each person’s story. Many of my patients come to me feeling unheard or rushed in traditional healthcare settings, and I’ve built my approach around changing that experience. I prioritize creating a safe, supportive space where patients feel comfortable being open, knowing they’ll be met with empathy, not judgment.
I’m also intentional about offering thoughtful, individualized treatment plans. That may include medication management when appropriate, but I also emphasize education, lifestyle factors, and practical coping strategies so patients feel empowered and involved in their care; not just prescribed to.
Brand wise, I’m most proud of the trust I’ve built with my patients and the reputation for being both approachable and thorough. My goal has never been to be the biggest practice, but to be one that people feel genuinely connected to and supported by. I want readers to know that my services are rooted in authenticity, compassion, and a commitment to helping people feel like themselves again or sometimes, for the first time.
At the end of the day, my mission is simple: to provide care that feels personal, meaningful, and impactful because mental health deserves the same level of attention and respect as any other part of healthcare.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I view risk as a necessary part of growth personally and professionally. I wouldn’t describe myself as someone who takes reckless risks, but I do believe in being intentional and willing to step outside of my comfort zone when there’s a vision or purpose behind it.
One of the biggest risks I’ve taken was investing significantly in marketing my practice. It was a meaningful financial commitment, and to be honest, it didn’t yield the results I initially hoped for. That experience could easily be seen as a setback, but I don’t view it that way. It taught me a lot about my audience, about what aligns with my brand, and about the importance of strategy over just visibility.
I firmly believe that no risk often means no reward. Growth doesn’t happen in a space where everything feels guaranteed or comfortable. At the same time, I’ve learned that risk-taking should be paired with reflection understanding what worked, what didn’t, and how to pivot moving forward.
That experience ultimately made me more thoughtful and resilient as a business owner. It reinforced that success isn’t always linear, and sometimes the return on a risk isn’t immediate or financial, it’s in the lessons that help you build something stronger and more aligned long-term.
