Community Highlights: Meet Sal Hemani of InterSpine Pain and Wellness Center

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sal Hemani.

Hi Sal, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
After earning my medical degree at Morehouse School of Medicine and completing a residency in anesthesiology at Emory University, I pursued fellowship training in interventional pain management. This is where I developed a strong foundation in diagnosing and treating complex pain conditions and understanding various management and therapeutic techniques in interventional pain. Early in my career, I recognized the limitations patients often face in large, high-volume systems—long wait times, fragmented care, and a lack of individualized attention. This drove me to create a better model, so I combined my clinical expertise with an entrepreneurial spirit and launched InterSpine. Although it’s still growing, this practice reflects years of training, hands-on experience, and a vision to deliver high-quality, comprehensive pain management with a personal touch—where every patient is provided exceptional care.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
One of the biggest obstacles was navigating the business side of medicine—something that isn’t taught in medical school or residency. From negotiating payer contracts and managing credentialing delays to setting up compliant billing systems, the learning curve has been steep.

It’s also important to build a team that not only has the right experience but also whose vision aligns with my vision for compassionate, patient-centered care. And of course, there are a lot of sleepless nights—juggling clinical care, administrative tasks, and the pressures of entrepreneurship all at once. On top of that, I have responsibilities at home as a husband and father, which adds another layer of complexity—but also keeps me grounded and motivated.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about InterSpine Pain and Wellness Center?
Of course! I’m a double-board certified anesthesiologist and interventional pain specialist committed to helping patients reclaim their lives from chronic and debilitating pain. I am the founder and medical director of InterSpine Pain and Wellness Center, where we offer advanced, minimally invasive treatments designed to reduce pain, improve function, and restore quality of life—all without the need for long-term reliance on medication or invasive surgery.

At InterSpine, our clinical expertise spans the full spectrum of acute and chronic pain conditions. We specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of spine-related disorders, including herniated discs, sciatica, spinal stenosis, facet joint arthritis, sacroiliac (SI) joint dysfunction, and degenerative disc disease. We also treat neuropathic pain syndromes such as complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), postherpetic neuralgia, and diabetic neuropathy. In addition, we provide care for musculoskeletal conditions such as osteoarthritis, tendonitis, bursitis, and myofascial pain.

At InterSpine, we are highly skilled in a range of minimally invasive procedures, including epidural steroid injections, radiofrequency ablation (RFA), spinal cord stimulation (SCS), dorsal root ganglion stimulation (DRG), kyphoplasty for vertebral compression fractures, and ultrasound-guided injections. We also incorporate regenerative medicine therapies, including platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and stem cell treatments, to support tissue healing and long-term pain relief in appropriate candidates.

I’ve co-authored textbook chapters, published peer-reviewed research, and presented nationally on topics in anesthesiology and pain management. I believe in a collaborative, patient-centered approach that prioritizes education, individualized care plans, and long-term wellness.

If you’re looking for a trusted interventional pain specialist serving the greater Atlanta metropolitan area, our team at InterSpine Pain and Wellness Center is here to help you find lasting relief and get back to living life on your terms.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
As a physician and business owner, I’ve learned that mentorship and networking are less about transactional relationships and more about genuine connection. My advice? Be intentional and curious. Look for people whose values and professional paths you respect—not just those who are successful, but those who are generous with their time and grounded in their purpose.

Early on, I reached out to people I admired, even if I didn’t have an established relationship with them. I asked thoughtful questions, showed up prepared, and most importantly, stayed consistent in maintaining the connection.

What’s worked well for me is showing up authentically, whether at conferences, networking events, or within the local community. When you lead with purpose, you naturally attract mentors and opportunities that align with your vision. And most importantly, continue to foster those relationships you create. Remember, quality trumps quantity.
