Today we’d like to introduce you to Sylloris Lampkin.
Hi Sylloris, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I grew up around many notable African-American entrepreneurs. Also, during childhood, I observed my father working for others and for himself contemporaneously. I didn’t give it much thought at the time. But after I reached adulthood and some measure of success, I did not feel satisfied with my earning capacity nor my use of free time. I felt like I could always do more. Now I realize that this dissatisfaction was grounded in my life-long observations and internalizations. I needed to do something more for myself and my family.
I tried a few different businesses before deciding on Atlanta Bedbug Heater Rentals. I took entrepreneurial-related courses and talked shop with business owners everywhere I went. I just needed to make a move. In the before-times (prior to the pandemic), my close friend from law school started a similar business in Dallas, TX, Bed Bug Heater Rentals Dallas. She and her hubby trained me and provided me with invaluable guidance and information on what I should do to make my dream a reality. I followed their roadmap and here we are.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road. Mistakes have been made, but I am constantly tweaking policies and our approach to improve our level of service. I consider myself a sidepreneur – yay for #sidegigsaturday. I practice law by day and slang bed bug heater systems by night (evening)! Finding the right balance between my professional obligations and my entrepreneurial aspirations was a challenge. I was very specific when we decided to move forward with Atlanta Bedbug Heater Rentals. I liked that renting bed bug heaters to DIY-minded consumers is a niche industry and it helped that I could set my own schedule.
I wanted to minimize expenses while still offering an acceptable alternative. With this, we decided that the heat treatment rental industry was right for us. We did not need a storefront. As an alternative, we’re mobile. Everything eventually came together with some intention, planning and action.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
We rent bed bug heaters to DIY-minded consumers. Heat treatments are a very effective and reliable solution for bed bug infestations. Bed bugs die almost instantly at temperatures above 118°. The problem is, heat treatments performed by exterminators are expensive. We make heat treatments a viable option for consumers who don’t want to spend $1000s treating bed bugs.
We deliver and pick up the bed bug heater systems. We provide all of the electronic connectors, written materials, videos, and in-person tutorials to our clients. We’re also on-call during client rental periods to answer heater system operation-related inquiries. Our pricing and level of service set us apart from others. We have the lowest rates in the area while maintaining an exceptionally high level of customer service.
I am most proud of our ability to help others. Our goal is to provide an affordable option for those with bed bugs. You’d be surprised, they’re quite common and not-so surprised that money is quite scarce! I’d like your readers to know that treating bed bugs with heat is not beyond your reach. We’re here, at your fingertips, when or if the time comes.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
Most people that know me don’t know that finding an entrepreneurial path was very important to me. Those in my close circle know that I seemed to have specialized in spending money and penny-pitching if there is such a thing. They did not know that this behavior was precisely the opposite of what I knew I should be doing, which was planning for late adulthood, accumulating wealth, and planning for future generations. So now, I’m trying. However, it turns out will be better than if I had not tried at all. But for now, business is good.
