Community Highlights: Meet The Supermarket of The Supermarket

Today we’d like to introduce you to The Supermarket.

Hi The, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
The Supermarket is a new chapter in a much longer story of creating space for artists, ideas, and community in Atlanta. Before The Supermarket, our team spent years building The Bakery – first as an independent arts space and later as a nonprofit focused on arts, education, experimentation, and public programming. That experience revealed both the need for flexible gathering spaces and the challenges of sustaining them over the long term.

The opportunity eventually arose to steward and reimagine more than 12,500 square feet within a century-old Atlanta building that has served many purposes throughout its history. Rather than creating a single-purpose venue, the vision was to build an evolving ecosystem where exhibitions, performances, workshops, private events, markets, creative businesses, and community gatherings could coexist and support one another.

Today, much of that vision is already active, but the project is still growing. Future phases include expanded food and beverage offerings, dedicated production and office spaces, and additional creative infrastructure designed to support both on-site and off-site work. The Supermarket is less a finished destination than an ongoing experiment in what a sustainable, community-centered creative space can become.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Definitely not. At a time when many independent gathering spaces are becoming harder to find, the goal has been to create a place where creativity, celebration, work, and community life can continue to intersect. Building creative spaces is rarely a straight line, and The Supermarket is no exception. The project was developed during a time when many independent arts spaces were shrinking, relocating, or closing altogether due to rising costs and changing economic conditions. Taking on a massive space required navigating construction, permitting, fundraising, staffing, programming, and the realities of operating a large physical space – all at the same time.

One of the biggest challenges has been balancing ambition with sustainability. We have always wanted the space to remain accessible while also building a foundation strong enough to support the building, staff, and long-term vision. That balancing act is ongoing.

At the same time, many of our greatest opportunities have emerged directly from those challenges. Building a project of this scale has required persistence, creativity, and an ongoing willingness to invest in a vision long before it is fully realized. The obstacles have forced us to stretch and pivot, to think differently about partnerships, programming, and sustainability, while also clarifying what people want from a space like this.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
The Supermarket is a 12,500-square-foot creative venue and cultural hub in Atlanta. What makes it unique is that it was designed to serve many purposes at once. The same building can host a wedding, an exhibition, a workshop, a performance, a fundraiser, or a neighborhood gathering, often within the same week.

Rather than separating commercial activity from cultural activity, we intentionally bring them together. Private events and partnerships help support exhibitions, public programs, and community access, creating a model that allows different audiences to share the same space and contribute to its growth.

What we are most proud of is the diversity of people who use the space. Artists, entrepreneurs, nonprofits, families, students, and businesses all engage with The Supermarket in different ways. Our goal has never been to serve a single audience, but to create a place where different communities can overlap, discover one another, and feel a sense of ownership.

The Supermarket is still evolving. Future phases include expanded hospitality offerings, creative workspaces, and additional infrastructure designed to support artists, organizations, and community gathering for years to come.
