Today we’d like to introduce you to Amanda Rivera Martinez.
Hi Amanda, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My name is Amanda, and I’ve always been drawn to creativity. Ever since I was a child, I dreamed of creating artwork that could inspire people by bringing beauty through new perspectives into their everyday lives. That passion led me to earn a bachelor’s degree in Studio Art with a focus in Marketing, and I recently completed my MBA because I wanted to better understand how creativity and business can work together.
My primary artistic practice is painting and mixed media, and I’m especially drawn to large scale canvases where I can fully express ideas inspired by my own life experiences. I enjoy creating work that encourages people to pause, reflect, and connect interpretations through different perspectives.
Looking ahead, I hope to expand into design and continue building a diverse creative portfolio. One of my biggest goals is to create spaces and opportunities where artists feel supported and connected, while using art to bring people together across different backgrounds and cultures. My experiences in both the business and creative worlds have taught me that great design isn’t just about making something beautiful but about understanding others and creating meaningful experiences. That’s the art I hope to bring to every life.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It’s not a smooth road, but the beauty is all within the journey, and I’m enjoying every step of the way. One big challenge I face as an artist has been balancing my creativity with consistency. While working a full time job and completing my MBA, I’ve had to learn how to manage my productivity with a lot of intention and continue creating work that contributes to a cohesive body of art rather than a collection of unrelated projects. Many times I begin with one vision but my emotions pull the work in another direction. Im practicing finding a balance between honoring those creative impulses while also staying committed to the larger story I want my portfolio to tell.
Another challenging experience that shaped me was organizing my first solo exhibition. It was incredibly rewarding, but it also taught me how much responsibility exists behind the scenes. Beyond creating the artwork, I had to manage and direct the overall experience which truly showed me that being a successful artist takes dedication and heavy organization. Since then, earning my MBA and working in banking have given me skills I didn’t realize I was missing earlier in my creative journey.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
What do I do?
I create layered works that transform emotion based expression into visual stories that invite observers to reflect, and reconnect with their sense of wonder and whimsy.
What do you specialize in?
My work centers around painting and mixed media, where I use a wide range of color and texture to tell stories inspired by memories and the beauty I find in the world around me. While painting is my primary passion, my education in Studio Art allowed me to explore a wide range of creative disciplines including drawing, metals, digital art, photography, sewing, fashion, and design. Each medium has influenced the way I approach my work today, giving me a broader perspective on composition and material.
What am I known for?
I am known for being unapologetically myself and deeply passionate about seeing the beauty in life and the inspiration around us. I express this in my art by free spiritedly including irony, girlhood, humorous metaphors and uplifting symbolism throughout my work. I think art is subjective… it can save lives and should be shared in light and fun ways.
What am I most proud of?
Growing up, I moved between many different states as a military child while spending a lot of time with my family in Puerto Rico. My culture is a big influence behind my drive as an artist, and these continuous life experiences have shaped my perspective and inspire many of my paintings. Im proud of have being able to build a community of smart and talented creatives & mentors who have helped continue my journey, but I’m most proud of the educated and graceful woman I have become through the process. Every creation I make represents not only a finished piece, but a chapter of my own growth as an artist in this world.
What sets me apart?
I believe what sets me apart is the authenticity behind everything I create. I love transforming pieces into something unexpected, layering stories until they become a larger reflection. My goal isn’t simply to make something beautiful, it’s to create spaces for connection…
I hope to encourage people to be less critical of themselves and others, to embrace imagination, and to appreciate all mediums art with openness. After all, I believe to be human is to be creative, we should honor and document our individual journeys on this Earth.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
Some important lessons Ive learned, especially after finishing my MBA is
1. How to build brands ethically and lead others with positive influence.
As AI continues to evolve and conversations around copyright become increasingly relevant, I cant emphasize more the importance of advocating for ethical practices and protecting the value and of original artwork.
2. Understand business strategy, and thinking about long term sustainability.
Navigating the art world with clarity on the business landscape is the key.
Artists can be both creative and successful entrepreneurs but first must understand how to profit from their talent in a rapidly evolving ecosystem.. It takes patience and expertise that can only be gained by experience but educating yourself on the art market can provide very useful understanding of trends and direction of the economic future.
