Today we’d like to introduce you to Catalina Gomez-Beuth.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My journey as an artist has been a path of discovery and passion. I was born in Medellín, Colombia, where I studied fashion design, but it was in the United States, where I’ve lived for the past 24 years, that my passion for art truly flourished into a career.
My family has been my greatest support; my husband and two children have always been there for me, encouraging me to pursue my dreams. My days are filled with the urgency of balancing my responsibilities as a mother and wife with my passion for art. I’ve learned to navigate the delicate balance between meeting my family’s needs and nurturing my own creative expression.
For over 15 years, I’ve been painting, primarily portraits that capture emotions and intimate moments. But my love for art isn’t limited to my own creative pursuits. I’ve also had the joy of sharing my experience and passion with others through teaching art classes to students of all ages, from young people to seniors. Seeing my students grow and develop as artists is one of the most rewarding aspects of my career.
Lately, I’ve been experimenting with new mediums like ceramics and weaving, which has allowed me to expand my artistic vocabulary and explore new forms of expression. I’m excited to see where this journey of discovery and creation takes me, and I’m grateful for the support of my family and the opportunity to share my art with others.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
No, it hasn’t been an easy road. As an artist and mother, I’ve faced several challenges along the way. One of the biggest obstacles has been establishing myself in a country that’s not my own, without contacts or prior knowledge of the system. Language has been a significant challenge, but I’ve found that art is a universal language that transcends linguistic and cultural barriers.
Despite the obstacles, I’ve found that art has allowed me to connect with people who share my passion and vision. Creativity and artistic expression have been my way of overcoming challenges and finding my place in this new country.
It’s been a process of learning and growth, and although there have been difficult moments, I’m grateful for the opportunity to share my art with others and to have found a community that shares my passion.
In addition, art has allowed me to build community and give back to the community that has supported and welcomed me, creating a space for people to connect and express themselves, and it’s precisely this power of art to bring people together and create a sense of belonging and community that fills me with satisfaction and purpose.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
As an artist, I’ve always been drawn to capturing the human experience through my work. I specialize in creating portraits that convey emotions and intimate moments, blending realism and symbolism to create authentic and emotive pieces.
My work is characterized by capturing the essence of my subjects and conveying their emotions through my paintings. I’m passionate about exploring themes of identity and human experience, and I believe my art is a way to connect with others and share my vision of the world.
What I’m most proud of is the connection I’ve built with my clients and students through my art. Seeing how my work can touch people’s hearts and make them feel seen and understood is what fills me with satisfaction.
I think what makes my art unique is my focus on emotion and human connection, as well as the subtlety and richness that I bring to my work. I also incorporate symbolic elements that add depth and meaning to my pieces, inviting viewers to explore and interpret their own connections to the art. I believe my art is a form of communication that transcends words and can connect with people on a deeper level.
Any big plans?
I’m excited to continue exploring and discovering new forms of artistic expression. I like the idea of letting the creative process guide me and surprise me, without having a clear final destination in mind.
Self-directed exploration can be challenging, but it’s also very rewarding. I think it’s great that I’m willing to face challenges and learn from them. Art is a never-ending journey, and there’s always something new to discover and explore.
I’m eager to see where this path takes me and what new things I discover about myself and about art. Uncertainty can be exciting, and I’m sure I’ll find surprises and achievements along the way. Experimenting with different mediums and techniques is allowing me to discover new facets of my art and of myself.
