Today we’d like to introduce you to Destiny Wagner
Hi Destiny, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My journey began during Covid after hosting several game nights. I noticed a lack of cultural representation in many games within the industry. It dawned on me that there wasn’t even a game in my native language, Kriol. At the time, I was competing in my fourth pageant, and I was selected last minute with only two weeks to prepare. By God’s grace, I won, becoming the first Black woman from Belize to win Miss Earth in 2021, making history! After a year of traveling and doing community service with my new title, I launched my company, Seasoned Lingo Games, and released our flagship game, “Weh Yuh Di Seh?” I’ve been using my platform to promote the games, and now I’m collaborating with various brands as a digital influencer while developing more culturally inclusive games for other countries.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It wasn’t smooth sailing at all. I faced a lot of setbacks right from the start. I didn’t do any pre-orders, and I had ordered 5,000 games without any buyers or resellers lined up. It took a while to build up my clientele and figure out which markets worked best. On top of that, I was handling everything on my own—customer service, fulfillment, marketing—it was a lot. That first year was really tough, and even now, I’m still dealing with some challenges, like advertising on Amazon. But I feel like I’ve got a better grip on things now, and I know I can push through anything that comes my way.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a creative who specializes in making culturally inclusive card games in local dialects and languages. I’m really proud of creating the first Belizean card game, and I’m glad it stands on its own and is successful because it’s great, not just because I was a former pageant queen. I’m multifaceted, and I see myself as a brand while continuing to build even more.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
A lot of people don’t know that I used to work for the New York Mets, and I think that’s part of why I’m good at sales. I didn’t know a thing about baseball, yet I was selling season tickets. I also did door-to-door sales, which made me comfortable with hearing “no” and shaped me as an entrepreneur. I’m confident and not afraid of rejection.
