Today we’d like to introduce you to Devon Vander Voort
Hi Devon, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’m an art dealer and curator! I studied art history and museum studies. I worked in many galleries, museums, historic sites, and other arts organizations before deciding to start my business.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Working for yourself means that you have to have a lot of accountability for yourself. When you work on projects, you are the one who decided when things need to happen and its up to you to get them done. Consistency is the most important thing to focus on but also the hardest at times.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I help private art collectors build their art collections. We determine what a collectors main goals are (investment, decor, management, etc) and then source artwork that matches their goals. I’m an art historian first and foremost, so I prioritize art and artists that are or will become part of the art historical cannon.
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I think that there are chance encounters that I’ve had that have been lucky. There are people who have supported my career and helped develop it that I met by chance. I think that there is more strategy than luck in my role, but I definitely feel like a lot if is simply just very lucky, too!
