Today we’d like to introduce you to Ferdon Hawkins.
Hi Ferdon, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan. I grew up in a single parent home, raised by my mother. I am the oldest out of my three siblings. My father passed away at an early age. I moved to Atlanta, Georgia at the age of 25. I attended College at American Intercontinental University and majored in Media Production. And that’s when I learned about behind the scenes of creating and producing Films and Television.
It was interesting to say the least, but that’s when I realized that I wanted to be in front of the camera and not behind the camera. Something happened where I had to leave school (regarding financial aid) but I felt that I was on to something and I hated to have to leave that school. Some years later, I was thinking about what is it that I am passion about?, and immediately Acting came to mind. I don’t know why I felt that way, but I decided to go with it and find a school to take some Acting classes. I looked back and realized that I would sit and study films and TV shows and watch, study and mimic actors. I always thought it was fascinating how a person could bring a character to life. Taking Acting classes is one of the best decisions I have made in my life! I have had (and have!) some of the best acting coaches/teachers that have helped me grow as a Professional Actor. Just a couple of years ago, I was signed to one of the best Agencies in Atlanta, UWM. I have a great Agent that has been getting me auditions in front of some of the Biggest names for commercials and TV/Film! What keeps me motivated and grounded is my family. I am married to my beautiful wife Al-Nisa and I am a stepfather to 3 beautiful girls. For this career choice, there has to be a lot of sacrifices that people aren’t aware of, but most importantly, my wife is very supportive of my career and is definitely my backbone. This has been an incredible journey and I will continue on this path to see where it takes me! Life is good!!!
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
One of my challenges over the years was breaking the habit of being shy and anti sociable. I would usually be really self-reserved. And when out in public, I used to look away from people and never be the one to open up a conversation with a stranger. Once I moved to Atlanta, I worked in Customer Service and it broke me out of that really quick. The other obstacle that had always been a factor was my confidence. Once I took Acting classes, I worked on my confidence because I know how important it is needed in this business. If u don’t believe in yourself first, who else will?
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a full-time Actor. I have worked on several independent films that are subject to be Pilots for TV shows. I am currently a student at Catapult Acting School.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
I am also a Voice Over Actor. I have been trained by a Professional Voice Over Coach and I have completed a Commercial Voice Over Demo Reel that I am very proud of. Also, I’m currently working on Narration Voice Over Training.
