Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamey Carrington.
Hi Jamey, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My name is Jamey Carrington, I’m 19 years old, and at the age of one I was diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) Type 2. I personally think this is one of the most uninteresting parts about me, but that’s just because it’s the part of me that I’m most familiar with. Regardless, it’s the part of me Jesus used to heal others.
Briefly speaking, I rededicated my life to God in Middle School in search of hope, and when I found it, I wanted to share that same hope with as many people as possible. I went to Pike County High School, which is deep in the woods and sticks. It was small, so when I uploaded my first video to social media talking about my testimony and struggles, it wasn’t long before everyone found my account. The first video blew up, then the second video blew up, then the third, and I quite literally saw what God can do overnight. On that same account, I went on to talk about my struggles with pornography, feeling depressed, and lacking any amount of optimism for the future. I was embarrassed so many times after posting that type of content, but it made it worth it when a fellow student would come up to me and let me know how much my words helped them. That made it worth it.
I now have over 500,000 followers collectively, and actually dropped out of Bible College in November to further pursue my dreams of being an evangelist and working among like-minded people. If I’ve learned anything going on this journey, it’s that when God lays something on your heart, you take it and run.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Aside from my own spiritual battles, I have faced certain external struggles that have taught me a lot on the subject of being a leader and spiritual guide for others.
Loneliness always seems to creep in on me in some shape or form, making me feel like I’m the only one going on this journey of inspiring millions. It can be a lot of weight to carry, but I just make sure to put that weight back on God since His shoulders are much bigger than mine. One of the devil’s best tricks is to convince us that we have no support. But we know the devil is a lie.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m most known for my inspirational videos sharing God (@itsjameycarrington on all platforms), and I’ve been told I could make a pen cry if I wanted to, apparently. In all seriousness though, I think when people see me give my testimony, and hear the words, “I love life, because I love Jesus”, they see a strange paradox that shouldn’t exist. Why would I, a chronically disabled 19 year old believe in God, and even worship Him? I think it speaks to people in a way only someone like me could. I don’t say that with pride either. I say it with gratitude.
I’m probably most proud of starting my own ministry, called 99 Ministries, which I plan to launch this year. 99 Ministries is all about finding the “little” people we walk past everyday, and giving them the help they desperately need. It’s about being in servitude for the sake of someone else, which is what Jesus Christ calls us to do.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
My favorite childhood memory was any chance I got to visit my grandma’s house when I was little. I’d get dropped off at her house early in the morning so my mom could go to work as a nurse, and my dad would pick me up coming back from work later in the afternoon. I remember getting my love for SpongeBob at her house, and showing her all my favorite Marvel and DC characters. We bonded in so many ways and she really just gave off warmth and love. I still see her a lot, though now things have changed since she is now battling early onset dementia. It’s one of my favorite childhood memories for sure but it’s bittersweet.
