Today we’d like to introduce you to Kayla Johnson.
Hi Kayla, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m from a small city called Mobile, Alabama. Becoming a hairstylist and entrepreneur was my God-given gift. (self-taught). I always wanted better for myself because I didn’t come from money but I did come from a family of love, truth, and discipline which is more than anything money could buy. I graduated high school and moved on campus to our local university. I realized I didn’t wanna pursue the career that only “payed well” so I dropped out and decided to do what made me truly happy: hair. Even if I didn’t make a lot of money from it, I knew the passion and love would outweigh those desires. Soon after, I started an apprenticeship for hair in 2007. I never worked a job after high school but managed to hustle and market my butt off to and make enough to pay for my apartment, bills, care note, etc. (I never went back home). Eight years later, I opened my first hair salon called 90210 boutique and hair salon along with co-owner Fallon Parker. I’ve produced four hair shows for my city, stated a hair extensions line (90210 hair bar), and now entered the education side of the industry after 13 years of perfecting my craft where I teach virtual classes to stylist across the world. I’m also a traveling stylist with a full clientele in mobile, Atlanta, Birmingham, and Houston TX where I will be relocating to in the spring. I have an amazing husband and two beautiful kids who supports my amazing journey
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t need a smooth road. I’ve faced times where my passion seems to go away bc of the trials and tribulations in my personal life, slow clientele, people walking out on me and just life happening. But one thing I live by is this, Jehovah God sees all and he is always there. It doesn’t cost a dime to be nice. Do right by people and try to possess Jesus qualities. Have tunnel visions and forget the outsiders. No response is the best response. Living with these principles has made me a lion and I know I will get through anything. I know a God that not many give a chance to understand. And that’s my power.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a self-taught hairstylist who can do pretty much anything but right now, I’m specializing in healthy hair and detailed customized haircuts. I’m most proud of ambition, drive, and how much I believe in myself. I don’t like to gamble, but I will bet on myself. What sets me apart is I don’t respond to bs. I don’t see it or them. (that’s the personal side, lol) I know it’s always light at the end of the tunnel so I don’t sweat for long. 5 minutes top. I love to give awesome customer service. I want to make my doll (customer) the happiest women on the planet. I like to give my girls a luxury experience.
We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
I’m extremely silly and I don’t like Tv or having a phone. If I didn’t have to use social media for work, I would lay extremely low, lol.
