Conversations with Kimberly Carter

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kimberly Carter

Hi Kimberly, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I always enjoyed dancing ever since I was a little girl, but when I went to college my passion for creating grew and I found a new love for the art of dance. Once that fire was ignited, I began choreographing halftime routines for my college dance team, hosted dance classes, and put together showcases with various styles of dance. I loved creating a space for movement literally anywhere and being able to see my visions come to life, so I decided to create Ki Movement Limited Co.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has not been a smooth road at all. I feel like because dance is an art form and art is subjective, it is a constant uphill battle to market something that people will be interested in while continuing to be true to yourself. When I first started my business, it started off slow and I had low clientele which at times made me question my talent and abilities, but my passion for dance kept me going.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Ki Movement Limited Co. is a dance and choreography company that promotes creativeness and movement. My motto is “Fall in love with a new expression” because I believe I am able to create a space for movement anywhere and allow individuals to experience dance in a new and unique light. Along with creating a space for others to fall in love with movement, I also have launched Ki Movement lounge and activewear for men and women. My most recent line was the Pink Out Collection for Breast Cancer Awareness, which is available on my website. This collection is special because my mom was a breast cancer survivor.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up, especially being the only daughter, I was full of sass and thought I was the star of the show. I loved to laugh, sing, and dance, and I always kept my family on their toes and busy. I wanted to be the next Beyonce and the next Cheetah Girl. I believe I was always confident with who I was and what I was capable of because my parents always instilled it in me. I have always known I had a love for singing and dancing so I danced at a studio and went to music school for a little while when I was in grade school. Then just like someone that wants to do everything, I tried sports, but quickly realized it was not for me and realized dance is where my heart is.
