Conversations with Sarah Ikaiddi

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Ikaiddi.

Hi Sarah, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I recently graduated high school in Lithonia, Georgia, and my journey has been shaped by a mix of leadership, discipline, creativity, and personal growth.

During high school, I was deeply involved in my school’s marching band program, where I played trumpet and eventually became Drum Major. That role was one of the most defining parts of my experience. As drum major, I was responsible for leading rehearsals, conducting performances, setting the tone for the band, and helping younger students stay organized and motivated. It taught me how to lead under pressure, communicate clearly, and stay disciplined even when things were stressful or demanding.

Alongside band, I was active in several student organizations, including TSA (Technology Student Association) and 21st Century Leaders. Through these programs, I participated in leadership development activities, team projects, and competitions that helped me build confidence, public speaking skills, and a stronger understanding of teamwork and responsibility.

Academically, I challenged myself with rigorous coursework and dual enrollment classes while preparing for college. Balancing schoolwork, leadership roles, and extracurricular commitments taught me time management and resilience, especially during busy seasons like competitions, performances, and exams.

Outside of academics, I developed a strong passion for dance and content creation. What started as a personal hobby eventually became a creative outlet where I could express myself freely and share my personality online. Over time, I began posting dance-related content on social media, which helped me connect with a wider audience and build confidence in my creativity and self-expression.

My journey has also included personal challenges that pushed me to grow emotionally and mentally. Learning how to stay focused and keep moving forward during difficult times helped shape my mindset and made me more determined to succeed in my goals.

Now that I’ve graduated, I’m entering a new chapter at Florida A&M University, where I plan to study criminal justice. My long-term goal is to pursue a career in forensic science or criminal law. I’m excited to continue growing academically while also exploring opportunities that allow me to use both my leadership experience and creative skills in meaningful ways.

Overall, my story is about growth, leadership, and learning how to turn discipline and passion into purpose. I’m still evolving, but each experience has helped shape who I am and who I’m becoming.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
One of the more personal challenges I’ve faced during my journey has been managing my mental health while balancing school, leadership responsibilities, and personal expectations. At times, I experienced periods of depression that made it harder to stay motivated, focused, or emotionally consistent, especially during high-pressure seasons like performances, academics, and leadership duties.

Learning how to navigate those moments was not easy. I had to figure out how to keep going even when I didn’t feel my best, while also learning when to slow down, reflect, and take care of myself. Over time, I began to understand the importance of structure, support systems, and being honest with myself about what I could handle.

Those experiences taught me resilience in a different way. Instead of defining me by my struggles, they pushed me to grow in self-awareness, discipline, and emotional strength. I learned that success is not just about achievement, but also about learning how to manage yourself through difficult seasons.

Overall, while mental health has been one of my challenges, it has also played a role in shaping my maturity and helping me develop a stronger mindset as I move into the next chapter of my life.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I would describe myself as a creative and student leader who expresses myself through performance, movement, and storytelling. My professional and creative focus has mainly been centered around dance, marching band performance, and content creation, where I combine discipline with creativity to express who I am.

One of the most defining parts of my creative journey has been my experience in marching band. As a trumpet player and Senior Drum Major, I was not only responsible for performing music, but also for leading rehearsals, conducting performances, and guiding a team of performers. That role taught me how precision, leadership, and creativity all work together in performance. It also pushed me to develop confidence in front of large audiences and take ownership of my presence as a leader.

Outside of band, I am also passionate about dance and digital content creation. Dance started as a personal outlet, but over time it became a form of expression and storytelling for me. Through social media, I’ve been able to share my dance content and connect with others, building a small creative platform where I can express my personality and creativity freely.

What I’m most proud of is my ability to balance structure and creativity at the same time. Whether I’m leading a marching band section, performing on the field, or creating dance content online, I approach everything with discipline and intention. I don’t just perform—I focus on how to improve, how to stand out, and how to bring energy and meaning into what I do.

What sets me apart is that I combine leadership with creativity. I’m not only a performer, but also someone who understands responsibility, teamwork, and execution. I’ve learned how to stay consistent, even when things are challenging, and how to grow in both structured environments like school programs and open creative spaces like social media.

Overall, my work is about expression, leadership, and growth—and I’m continuing to build on that as I move into the next chapter of my journey.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
My biggest advice for anyone just starting out is to stay consistent, even when you don’t feel fully confident yet. A lot of growth doesn’t happen when everything feels perfect—it happens when you keep showing up through the learning process.

One thing I wish I understood earlier is that you don’t have to have everything figured out before you begin. In high school, especially while balancing leadership, academics, and extracurriculars, I used to feel like I had to do everything flawlessly. Over time, I realized that mistakes, setbacks, and learning moments are part of the process, not signs that you’re behind.

I would also tell people not to underestimate the value of discipline and time management. When you’re involved in a lot of different things, it can get overwhelming quickly. Learning how to prioritize, take breaks when needed, and still stay committed to your responsibilities makes a huge difference in long-term success.

Another important lesson is to take care of your mental and emotional well-being while chasing your goals. It’s easy to get caught up in performance and expectations, but your mindset and health matter just as much as your achievements. Finding balance is something I’m still learning, but it has helped me stay grounded.

Overall, I would say: start where you are, use what you have, and grow as you go. You don’t need to be perfect to begin—you just need to be willing to keep going.
