Today we’d like to introduce you to Shachi Srivastava
Hi Shachi, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
“Daddy, why did you go inside the computer?” My three-year-old daughter’s innocent question echoed in my mind, making me rethink my life choices. It was 2010 when, driven by a desire to reunite my family, I took a sabbatical from my career as a software professional and moved thousands of miles to the United States. Little did I know, this decision would transform my life in ways I couldn’t have imagined.
From a young age, I was always drawn to colors and creativity. However, life led me down a different path, and I found myself immersed in the world of software development. Despite the demands of my career, I always found solace in sketching and painting during my free time.
The transition from a bustling career to becoming a homemaker was not easy. I faced numerous challenges, from adjusting to a new country to finding my place in a completely different lifestyle. Yet, amidst these struggles, my passion for painting became my anchor. I began to dedicate more time to my art, using it as a means to navigate this new chapter in my life.
During this period, I explored various mediums and techniques, experimenting with different styles. The freedom to create without constraints allowed me to develop a unique voice in my artwork. Influences from my cultural background, experiences as a software professional, and the new surroundings in the United States all melded together in my paintings.
In 2012, I joined a Facebook group called the 30 Days Art Challenge. Committing to this challenge, I practiced every day, pushing myself to improve and try new techniques. The daily discipline and the supportive community were instrumental in refining my skills and building my confidence as an artist.
As my confidence in my art grew, I began to share my work with a broader audience. I participated in local art shows and exhibitions, each one a milestone in my journey. The recognition I received was both humbling and encouraging, validating my decision to pursue my passion.
Looking back, I realize how much I have grown as an artist and as an individual. The decision to leave my career and focus on my family and art was challenging, but it was also incredibly rewarding. Art has not only been a creative outlet but also a source of strength and resilience.
Today, my work reflects a blend of my past experiences and my ongoing journey. I continue to explore new themes and techniques, constantly evolving as an artist. I have exhibited in Georgia, New York, Miami and several Online platforms. Every year I am involved with Raksha Art Show that helps women and children from South Asian Community. Women empower Women and that is very close to my heart. My future goals include being more deeply involved in Women empowerment, hosting solo exhibitions and perhaps even returning to teaching art, sharing the joy of creation with others.
The journey from software professional to homemaker and artist has been a transformative one. Through all the changes and challenges, my passion for painting has been my savior, guiding me towards a fulfilling and creative life.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Adjusting to the life in The United States came with its own set of difficulties. The sense of isolation from being away from familiar surroundings and the pressure of starting anew were overwhelming at times. Financial constraints added another layer of stress, making it hard to invest in art supplies or take classes.
Balancing my responsibilities as a homemaker while trying to carve out time for my art was a constant challenge. There were days when self-doubt crept in, and I questioned if I had made the right decision. The uncertainty about my future and lack of clear path forward were daunting.
However, each obstacle also served as a lesson in perseverance. I learned to make the most of what I had, using household items as my tools to create art and seeking free online resources to improve my skills. My dedication to art never wavered and I took the leap of faith when I joined the Facebook Group called “The 30 Days Art Challenge”. This group provided me with a much-needed structure and community support, helping me stay motivated and focused. Everyday I committed to practicing art fueled by my passion to explore more and more. The mindset of never giving up helped me persevere and continue pursuing my passion for art.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I explored various mediums and techniques. I started working with Acrylics, Watercolors, and Mixed Media, experimenting to find my unique voice. Additionally I started practicing Madhubani Art, a traditional Indian Art form. The intricate patterns and vibrant colors of Madhubani Art resonated with me, allowing me to connect with my cultural roots and infuse my work with deeper meaning. I sought to create a harmonious balance between Madhubani Art and Contemporary Art, blending traditional motifs with modern techniques. This fusion allowed me to develop a distinctive style that resonates with a diverse audience and pays homage to my heritage while embracing contemporary influences.
One of the most significant milestones was creating a painting for the Consulate of India, in Atlanta. This piece received huge recognition and was a testament to my dedication and authenticity of my art. Another notable milestone was my first Portrait of the Ex Prime Minister of India, Atal Behari Vajpayee. This portrait received recognition and marked pivotal moment in my artistic career.
As my skills and confidence grew, I began to specialize in customized paintings. This expertise allowed me to cater to individual client needs, creating personalized pieces that held special meaning for them. Each customized painting was a unique collaboration, merging my artistic vision with client’s desires.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
To those just starting out on their artistic journey, my advice is simple yet profound: “never give up”. Success and failure are both part of the process. Embrace them with humility and keep pushing forward. Remember, each challenge is an opportunity for growth, and each success is a testament to your perseverance and passion.
