Conversations with Ville Murdock and CJ McCaskill

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ville Murdock and CJ McCaskill.

Hi Ville and CJ, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
We previously met as hired tattoo artists in 219 Tattoo Shop. The vision behind Atlanta Ink was to bring together a group of people with individual strengths and expertise. We simply wanted to have our own place to do art. Create a space where we could improve our skills from learning from one another. We put in a lot of work into this shop and still are, it never stopped. It took about six months to build it from the LLC start to opening. We quickly learned that every day is a new opportunity to master a new challenge.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It was difficult to get everyone to get on one accord. Each person we invited to be part of the opening team had their own beliefs and experiences—we were are a group of chiefs. Maintaining artists is a constant challenge. The tattooing industry can be a revolving door as artists hop from shop to shop. CJs previous ownership experience—Atlanta Ink being his second shop—taught us that business can sometimes be a journey of trial and error. However, there are things that you can avoid through focusing on the science of the business industry. Dealing with artists means you’re dealing with people who have their own unique ways of securing their future. So, its really a learning experience. It’s about individuality— the best thing we can do is understand that everyone is an individual and deserves validation.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Ville is best known for his Black and Grey work. His amazing beard sets him apart from the rest! CJ is best to know for Photo Realism. He’s most proud of opening Atlanta Ink as his second shop because being a business owner has not been easy.

Who else deserves credit in your story?
Nate, an owner of 219 Tattoo Shop, gave us a chance to make a name in the tattoo industry—for that we are forever grateful.
