Today we’d like to introduce you to Alyssa Avery.
Hi Alyssa, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My name is Alyssa Avery, and I’m an illustrator from Atlanta, Georgia. Shaped by a lifelong immersion in creativity and
storytelling. I’m a proud alumnus of the Savannah College of Art and Design, where I majored in Illustration with a concentration in Entertainment. Here, I refined the passion that first took root in my childhood. I come from a family rich in artistic and musical talent. Creativity was never just a hobby in my world—it was a language. My earliest and most influential teacher was my grandfather, a black printmaker and cartoonist who remains my greatest idol. At 5 years old, he would sit me at his desk and tell me, “Draw this, and I’ll come back and critique it.” Those moments weren’t just lessons in drawing; they were lessons in discipline, observation, and believing in my voice as an artist.
My grandfather’s dream of becoming a cartoonist was shaped and limited by the realities of the 1960s, when opportunities for black artists were especially restricted. Instead, he chose to raise his family, carrying his creativity quietly while passing it on to his daughter and then to me. He introduced me to Marvel and DC comics, sparking a fascination that ignited my love for illustration at a very young age. In many ways, my story is an extension of his—proof that dreams can be delayed, but not lost. That legacy fuels my work, making my journey one that can inspire many: honoring where you come from, embracing your influences, and carrying forward the dreams of those who came before you.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Personally, my journey wasn’t difficult overall. The biggest challenges were the ones many artists face: figuring things out internally, trusting myself, and allowing myself to grow.
Early on, I was figuring out what stories I truly wanted to tell and how I wanted to express them authentically through my illustrations. That process took time and self-reflection. Due to that exploration, I realized embracing that uncertainty helped me grow rather than feel stuck by it.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a SCAD alumna, where I majored in Illustration with a concentration in Entertainment. My passion lies in character design, and much of my work is inspired by elements of pop culture—from anime and music to the striking Neo-Pop surrealism “Lowbrow” aesthetics. I’m drawn to bright, bold colors often associated with pop art, but I approach them through a semi-realistic lens, blending stylization with lifelike detail. Through this fusion of influences, I strive to create characters that feel both dynamic and relatable, reflecting my ongoing exploration of storytelling, design, and the ways that color and form can evoke emotion.
My art really reflects this mix of influences and storytelling. Each character I create is an experiment in personality, color, and form, blending the semi-realistic with playful, bold elements. You’ll see hints of anime, music, or Neo-Pop aesthetics, but it will always be filtered through my own perspective. The bright colors, expressive designs, and attention to detail all work together to give each piece of mine a sense of life and individuality. Showing not just what I draw, but how I see the world.
What are your plans for the future?
Looking ahead, I want to continue expanding the worlds and characters I create, exploring new stories, and pushing my style in unexpected directions. I’m interested in projects that allow me to combine semi-realistic illustration with vibrant, playful influences from pop culture, whether that’s in comics, animation, or other visual storytelling mediums. My goal is to create work that resonates emotionally with people, sparks imagination, and continues to evolve as I discover new ways to express my ideas.
Alongside developing my own projects, I’m excited to explore opportunities that let me collaborate with other creators and bring fresh perspectives into my work. I want to continue learning and growing while creating characters and stories that connect with people. Ultimately, I hope to build a body of work that reflects both my evolving artistic voice and my passion for storytelling.
