Today we’d like to introduce you to Anthony Sanders.
Anthony, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
When I was younger, I started reading comic books around the age of 7 and it’s something that I continued doing through to adulthood. After reading so many and seeing so many different characters I decided to submit artwork to Marvel comics. After a rejection or two I started creating my own comic books at home. Later, I started to get away from drawing my own comics and just started doing other things with my artwork. A little over 10 years ago my brother Raymond Sanders started his own independent venture and created Fantasy Art Comics with the character Fierce as his headliner. Once I saw what he was doing with his character it made me want to start creating my own characters and drawing my own comic books again except in a more professional manner. So, a few years ago I started out with the book Vicious Cycles which was a book that will allow for you to introduce a new character every issue. This was done to allow for us to go ahead and let people see multiple characters quickly to build the universe faster. Even though we haven’t done that book in a while there are still things in the works for that book title. Currently I am doing a book called Street Sweepers and will be releasing issue three this year. The book is about a team of used to be street gang members that’s have super powers and mostly deal with street level criminals unless called upon to do more. I am just getting started and hope to be do this book and others in the future.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Anytime you are funding your own creations the road will be bumpy but if it’s something that you are passionate about you find ways to overcome those obstacles. Throughout my time working on my own books as well some other projects, I’ve been lucky enough to network with people who are like minded and are willing to exchange talent for talent so that we can all achieve what it is that we’re trying to achieve in the independent space. Although challenging to work a full time job and create can be a big chore once you see the work coming to life it makes it all worth the effort.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Since I’ve been doing the comic book thing I’ve worn many hats in this space. For some of the books I do the entire book from the drawing to the inking to the writing as well as the coloring. Although I’ve had other people do inking and coloring for me sometimes, I just find it exciting to do all of the work myself. It is a daunting task but if the end result comes out the way that you want it’s definitely worth it. I also do things like logo creation as well as letterhead creation, but I am usually most proud of the work on my own comic book.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
I think that my biggest advice is network as much as possible, go to as many shows as you’re able to go to even if you’re not able to be a vendor. Even if you can just go to meet people who are doing it and ask questions about how to get started what some of their resources are and ask about shows that you could possibly do to get your name out more. Use social media to your advantage and promote yourself every chance you get as well. Also do not think that you have to start out big. Understand that you can start out small and the more people you meet the more your ability to produce your product will grow.
