Today we’d like to introduce you to Arianna Jones.
Hi Arianna, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started acting around age 13. I was on an all-star competition cheerleading team as well as the cheer team at my middle school and my middle school drama program was holding auditions for a play called So You Wanna Be a Cheerleader. Of course, I told myself, “Okay, you have to audition for whatever this is,” and surprisingly enough, I auditioned and got the lead role. From that point on, I acted in every play I possibly could. I had instantly fell in love with acting on stage. Once I got to high school, I decided to go out and look for opportunities acting on camera and coincidentally booked a role as a cheerleader in the movie Goosebumps 2! Being on set working on the film sparked a whole new passion and love within me. Since that day I’ve never yet experienced a feeling of complete fulfillment and joy similar to the feeling I get whenever I’m on set. After high school, I attended New York University Tisch School of the Arts and graduated with my Bachelor of Fine Arts.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I grew up in Virginia. Where I lived there weren’t many opportunities for people pursuing a career in the arts in general but definitely not for African American women. I also didn’t come from a very wealthy family. I remember throughout high school into college, I worked two, sometimes three, jobs at a time just to have the money to travel from Virginia to wherever I needed to go for the jobs I booked. I was determined to make it happen one way or another.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am mostly known for acting. However, I am an actress, writer, and producer as well as an activist. I always mention that I am an activist because the artistic work I do revolves around advocating for civil rights and speaking out against injustice in all forms. What makes my work unique is the way I display on my own life experiences and comment on the values within my culture which, more often than not, are more relatable to people of other cultures and backgrounds than they may initially expect. I’m very proud of the fact that I am able to move people and to bring people together through art making.
So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
