Daily Inspiration: Meet Carmean Matthews

Today we’d like to introduce you to Carmean Matthews

Hi Carmean, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
TheGoods started in Canoga Park, California with a S’More Chocolate Chip Cookie. My husband loves chocolate chip cookies so I made them for him. One day we visited the double tree and fell in love with their cookies. I immediately went home and replicated it. A restaurant in my area was looking for desserts and decided to allow me to sell my S’More chocolate chip cookies, regular chocolate chip cookies, and brownies. We have in been in business since 2012. Now serving Georgia.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Since 2012 I have had four more children in addition to the one we already had. Total of 5 now. I have received four degrees a bachelor’s degree, masters degree, educational specialist, and Doctoral degree. It has been a challenge to juggle children, a husband, main job as a teacher, and having a business. Often times I put my business on pause because of the stress of wearing so many hats. My business has gone from just desserts to now catering vegan and non vegan food.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I currently work as a literacy coach in which I work with middle school teachers supporting them in lesson planning, instructional strategies, and implementing data into their instruction. I do TheGoods on the side and I am know for my specialities chocolate chip cookies, brownies, and cheesecakes. I am also know for my annual vegan brunch. Each year I host a vegan brunch around Mother’s Day. People look forward to this event every year. This year will be the 5th annual.

Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
One of my favorite magazines and websites is forks over knives. My favorite app is Square it helps me send professional looking invoices and great for organizing inventory. It keeps up with how much I have made over the years and saves customers information. They don’t take too much of the money out of my profit either. Additionally, I love Instagram. I follow a few people who inspire with their posts on delicious recipes.
