Today we’d like to introduce you to Dai Elyse.
Hi Dai, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My name is Dai. I am a self taught fashion designer and mentor, originally from Brooklyn NY. I began my journey in fashion as a custom designer over 10 years ago. However I launched my Elyse Dai Co. brand officially in 2019 and have produced 3 runway shows, with one currently in the works, for 2026, I prep to relaunch.
I currently mentor in non-profit spaces, like The Black Girls Designers Club and Mission Society of NYC. These spaces provide creative resources and opportunities to young artists, creatives and enthusiasts, within BIPOC communities. I have found a such a safe space here, and I am excited to expand my reach within those spaces, as well.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road is never smooth! One thing that I am learning is that it is not meant to be. Much like sand paper, I think the bumps are necessary to polish us and make us, not just better artists, but better humans beings. Some of my struggles as a creative have been finding the balance. I don’t believe you can create at your fullest capacity if there isn’t a sense of balance. I mean, you can read about it and you can watch as many videos as you want about it- which I have! However, everybody is different. We all have different experiences. We are all individuals at the end of the day and that is what makes the bumps so important, they shape YOU into who YOU are supposed to be. I am learning to appreciate that part of the refining process.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am and Self Taught Fashion Designer Fiber Artist and Painter. I began teaching myself to sew over a decade ago. Soon after, I began servicing in custom design, creating attire for special events like baby showers, proms, birthdays and weddings. I have created samples for local independent brands, as well as custom tailoring and commissioned fashion art pieces and upcycle projects too!
I love all things fashion. Sometimes I find it hard to pinpoint, which has been one of my struggles, especially when I talk about “finding the balance”. However I look at it as a strength now. I understand that it is what sets me apart from others. Being self taught, I am not afraid to do it all, even the lil things, if it will make me better.
My intention is to provide quality handmade garments and a quality experience go along with it. I have self- produced 3 fashion shows, which I can say, is what I am most proud of. I was able create an experiences that embodied how I would like to impact those that connect and collaborate with me, in fashion spaces, now and in the future to come. A collective platform where not only I shine, but the light of other artists, as well.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
Right now I am reading “Buddha Mind, Buddha Body” By Thich Nhat Hanh and I just finished “Love After Midnight” By, my favorite, Sister Souljah. Reading “funds the mental” and it keeps me grounded. I love embracing new tools that will keep me at peace with myself. Journaling, painting, hand sewing, crocheting are all ways that I spend time with self, which really important, for me.
When it comes to Podcasts, I really love a good Emma Grede ‘Aspire’ episode. I have been following her journey for a while and I love her sharp delivery. A ‘heavenly’ word from Sarah Jakes Roberts never ever hurts, anyone. I do take time to enjoy small guilty pleasures, like tuning into a good housewives episode, or 2 or 3. Some call it ‘mindless banter’, I call it ‘balance’.
