Daily Inspiration: Meet Erika Moore

Today we’d like to introduce you to Erika Moore.

Erika, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I was born and raised in Decatur Georgia, and I have always had a passion for art. Theater feels very close to home because my whole life I have been raised in a household full of actors and singers. My love for the arts, attention to detail, and vast imagination explains how I am able to create looks and styles through my makeup artistry.

I received my BFA in Theater Production at Valdosta State University in 2019. In that same year, I also received my Makeup Artistry Certificate from Gwynnis Mosby Makeup Academy. Last but not least, I graduated from Aveda Institute of Atlanta where I received my Master of Cosmetology License. My love for Makeup and the world around it catapulted me to plan and explore my art and create more and more each day.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Of course, it hasn’t been a smooth road, but that’s the blessing of it, I’m learning to be stronger because of it. I feel like every artist or any type of creative person deals with a battle of doubt and fear and believing in themselves, and not allowing other people to dictate their creativity.

I remember my biggest issue was to even get clients or get other people to recognize my work. I couldn’t even afford products, tools, and didn’t own a makeup bag to be able to do people‘s makeup at one point. I would work 2 jobs like grocery stores and restaurants jobs just so that I can make enough money and save up. Even though I felt I deserved better working those jobs, I never gave up on Makeup! I would practice and read books on how other famous makeup artists would shadow and highlight faces, and read on the history or makeup itself. I just refused to stay stuck, in a place of “well I could’ve” “I didn’t have, so”

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am currently doing editorial projects with other young creators like myself. I have been a part of one movie set and 2 independent films so far in my career. And I have done male grooming for 4 celebrities. I am currently using my editorial projects as a way to network and build my portfolio until I’m able to get into the union.

I’m known for my makeup artistry and bringing a thought to life through makeup. One thing that sets me apart is my belief in education and knowledge which was what fueled me to pursue all my degrees, certifications and licenses. I’ve also studied light, color theory and skin all in college which adds to my overall repertoire of knowledge, confidence and skills about makeup

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
That feeling I get when I finish doing makeup and client can’t stop looking at themselves is amazing. It’s just a satisfying thing when I see that happen because I know I have done my job right. Also, one thing that makes me happy is when I come up with a concept for a Photoshoot and it comes to life! Like I had just dreamed about this and it has come true because of my makeup! I love that feeling!
