Today we’d like to introduce you to Foli For A Film.
Hi Foli For A Film, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Foli For a Film started in Bogotá, Colombia as a music project between Camilo Salazar and Megan Reátiga, and has since grown into a full band based in the Atlanta area. Megan leads the band as the frontwoman, vocalist, and bass player, bringing a strong female presence to a sound that combines psychedelic textures, progressive rock ideas, and indie energy. The full ensemble now includes Megan, vocalist, and bass player, Camilo on guitar, synths, and production; Alex Sotka on drums; and Theo Vilamitjana on synths.
The band has performed in Atlanta-area spaces such as Mayhem House, The Doll House, The Reverb Room, Smiths Olde Bar and KSU, as well as different venues in Colombia. With roots in both Colombia and Georgia, Foli For a Film brings a multicultural background, an expressive live show, and an inclusive spirit to the stage. Our music is emotional, immersive, and made for people who connect with dreamy, loud, and colorful live performances.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely has not always been a smooth road. One of the biggest challenges has been rebuilding the band after moving from Colombia to Georgia. Foli For a Film started as a project in Bogotá, so relocating meant having to start over in many ways: finding new musicians, connecting with a new local scene, learning how booking works in Atlanta, and rebuilding our audience from the ground up.
Another challenge has been learning how new audiences will react to who we are and what we do. Prog and psychedelic rock spaces have often been male-dominated, so having a female frontwoman and bass player has made us think a lot about visibility, representation, and how to confidently take up space in that scene. We have also wondered how audiences in the U.S. would respond to parts of our setlist being in Spanish, which is the native language of most of our members. Instead of seeing that as a limitation, we see it as part of what makes the band honest and unique.
Thankfully, we have loved the way crowds have received us so far. It has been really meaningful to see people connect with the music even across language and cultural differences. Those moments have reminded us that emotion, sound, and energy can communicate beyond words.
Balancing the creative side of the band with the practical side has also been a challenge. Writing, recording, rehearsing, promoting, booking shows, creating visuals, and managing social media all take a lot of time and energy, especially as an independent band. We have had to learn how to do many things ourselves while still staying focused on the music.
At the same time, these challenges have helped shape the band. They have pushed us to become more intentional, more collaborative, and more connected to our identity as a multicultural, female-fronted band. The process has not always been easy, but it has made the project stronger and more meaningful.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Our work is very connected to atmosphere. We are not just trying to play songs; we are trying to build a mood. Songs like “Warm Haze” and “Take Me To Mars” show the side of the band that is colorful, dreamy, and emotional, while our live shows bring out the heavier, louder, more unpredictable parts of the music. We like when a song feels like it is slowly opening a door into another place.
We have released music independently, created our own visual identity, and continued building the band from the ground up. What sets us apart is that Foli For a Film feels like its own little universe: female-fronted, multilingual, cinematic, a little weird, and very sincere.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
Something interesting about Foli For a Film is the artistic background that each member brings to the band. Even though the project began in a bedroom during the middle of the global pandemic, everyone involved has a strong creative and professional background that helps take the project to another level.
Camilo and Alex are both professional jazz musicians, Theo is a classical pianist, and Megan is a visual artist. Because of that, the band is not only shaped by rock or indie influences, but also by jazz, classical music, visual art, and experimental approaches to sound.
That mix is also a big reason why our visuals are so particular and recognizable. The visual side of Foli For a Film is not separate from the music; it is part of the same world. From our colors and imagery to the way we present ourselves online and on stage, we try to make everything feel connected to the sound of the band. Each member brings a different perspective, and that combination is a big part of what makes Foli For a Film feel like its own world.
