Daily Inspiration: Meet Heather Taylor

Today we’d like to introduce you to Heather Taylor.

Hi Heather, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Family has always been important to me. My high school senior portraits sparked an interest that has shaped where I am today. The photographer not only made it a fun, memorable experience but arrived with husband and babies in tow. They walked around town while she worked with me, coming alive with the camera in hand. I always knew I wanted to do something creative and have the flexibility and freedom that comes with working for myself. At a pivotal time in my life, I saw an avenue to building a career that my family could be a part of, so I chased that opportunity. At UGA’s orientation, I saw “fine arts emphasis in photography” as an option and never looked back. From freshman year, I began photographing friends and family members. My mom, Cindy, was there every step of the way. She still works with me at every photoshoot, a pro with the reflector (my secret sauce!) and the warmest presence. She has a magical way of helping clients feel comfortable and seen. We’ve shot weddings from my hometown, Social Circle, all the way to Nijmegen, Netherlands. As I now have the privilege of being a mom, my focus has shifted back to my first photography love, senior portraits. Now I truly have two dream jobs, mom and photographer.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Working every weekend while still in school was hard. I’ve missed many family/friend’s events and get-togethers, I even missed a best friend’s wedding. I hustled at the beginning so I don’t have to now. I’ve learned to say no and not overextend myself. Also, shifting to only shooting local weekday sessions has been HUGE. A personal struggle, a missed-miscarriage in 2021. I continued working through a broken heart, shooting a maternity session just a week after our loss. It’s changed my perspective and given me even more empathy, you really never know what someone is going through.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specialize in senior and graduation photography, with a love for all portraits. I’m known for my warm, true-to-life photos. I love keeping my colors as clean/natural as possible, with a pop. I’m proud of the clientele I’ve built. The first thing I notice about someone is their eyes – every little detail – and how the light plays off of them. Capturing a person’s true self is something I strive for during a session.

Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
Starting out I googled, youtubed, and researched so many blogs about photography. I even flew across the world to New Zealand for a workshop. Now I tend to get more inspiration from my daily life. I study light during the most mundane or exciting moments. I’m honestly blanking on this one (mom brain?). I use Instagram a lot, haha. Instagram is a constant source for more knowledge, sharing work, and connecting with others. The photography community is awesome! Always willing to help each other.
