Daily Inspiration: Meet Jaris WAV

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jaris WAV.

Hi Jaris, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I was born to Jamaican parents in The Bronx, but I grew up in New Rochelle, New York. I spent a lot of time in the church with my family, which is where I got a lot of experience with acting, music, and public speaking. I even met the mayor of my city for winning a big oratorical competition when I was like 9. I moved to Clayton County in 2012 and did 6-12th grade at a private school in North Atlanta that I got a scholarship to for showing promise in elementary school. I started playing percussion for the symphonic band then drum set for the schools honor’s Jazz ensemble in High school. it was around that time in 2017 when I began making beats and songs for myself and my friends.

I went to Xavier University of Louisiana After high school, pursuing a Physics degree, and I’m finishing that same degree at Kennesaw State. Since I moved back to Atlanta I’ve become the drummer for the Dainkheads, made musical collaborations with Artists around the city, and started doing murals for local businesses like Village skatepark.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Being the first person in my family born in America means I’ve always had to figure things out without help from and older siblings or cousins around my age. It also comes with a lot of pressure from family to excel in whatever I do. My family moved to Georgia in 2012 because of financial stressors, and I was driving an hour to school everyday from my Grandma’s house in Jonesboro to Vinings from 2012-2019. Also attempting to pursue a degree in Physics while laying the foundation for my artistic career is crazy and I do not recommend this path to many. I have ADHD and giving myself the time to pursue my diverse interests can look quite messy at times.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a recording artist, producer, muralist, and philosophical seeker who specializes in everything alternative/experimental hip hop. I started off rapping in 2014-15, and began making my own beats in 2017. Since then I’ve learned how to mix my own tracks to really dial in my own sound. I started learning to paint about 3 years ago and since then have done some really cool projects for artists and businesses in Atlanta. My current magnum Opus is my self produced album Quantum Rizzics. The project is a seamless 7 tracks, and explores the last few years of my life as an emerging artist and physicist. The track titles are metaphors for the different ways Modern Physics concepts overlap with the path of the artist. I think its literally one of the most sonically creative and thoughtful projects I’ve ever heard, and it still gives me chills (why else would I spend 3 years crafting it‽). The project showcases my most valuable skill, lateral problem solving. To think that I could apply upper level physics concepts to my journey as an artist seamlessly and accurately shows a certain level of creative problem solving. I use all my skills and anything I’ve learned in ‘outside the box’ contexts to help me solve seemingly complex problems.

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
Right now I’m reading Man and His Symbols by Carl Jung. Otherwise, I really enjoy self help books. This year I’ve read psycho-cybernetics, Letting go of your bananas, The game of Life and How to Play it, Designing the mind: principles of psychitecture and some others. (audible is goated). I also love political education, last year I read Assata, and Confessions Of An Economic Hitman and loved them both. I also love a good youtube essay, shout out FD signifier and friends.
