Today we’d like to introduce you to Kevin Freiberg.
Hi Kevin, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My name is Kevin Freiberg, and I am a professional Master Cosmetologist working in the production side of the industry. I have been in the business for almost 12 years now, which is so crazy to think! I began my beauty industry journey in the salon realm, working for companies like Sassoon Salon, DryBar, and Authentic Beauty. While working in the salon, I made connections with a client or two who were signed models and started booking me for jobs outside the salon. Not too much long after, I got pulled into the modeling/television side of business, leaving behind my chair and clientele. During Covid-19, when the world shut down, so did much of the production world. During that time, I rebranded myself into FREI BEAUTY, a self-titled Commercial Beauty Team. Leaving behind the long hours of television, I now work in the very niche world of commercialized beauty. Commercial clients tend to book more consistently and have less hours on set, which is always appreciated! I’ve now been in this Entrepreneurial space for 4 whole years, successfully expanding year after year! Now, I work with companies such as Coca-Cola, Casemate, Chickfila, Delta, Brown & Co Jewelers, and many others!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road of the beauty industry is a very, very strenuous one. You combine that with the world of production, and it becomes this hurricane of a force. I’ve learned so much though through my experiences. I have learned to network my way through every room I step into. I’ve learned to multitask administrative duties while being on job sites and actively working in the studio. I’ve had to learn to expense business needs and handle invoicing and billing corporate clients (which brings the dreaded understanding of net pay). Every time I think I’ve got the hang of this business, it humbles me and teaches me something new!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My job tends to confuse a lot of people when I say commercial beauty. Commercial beauty is the window advertising in a storefront, the catalogue you order from, the billboards you see in Times Square, or a TV commercial for that new product you love. It’s the art of creating a visual that not only sells the product but relates to the consumer in a way that brings them back for more. My job in all of this is to tailor and craft looks that serve each company’s image and branding. I’m known in my world for my clean, elevated, beauty looks. I make people look like the best versions of themselves rather than painting a new face onto them. I take the most pride in my diversity of artistry. My heart goes into every brush stroke or curl, and I think my brand stands firm in that. I have women, men, children, and non-binary talent of all ages, sizes, and ethnicities sprinkled across my feed and website, and it brings so much joy to my heart. What makes me different from the rest is my love for the individual in my chair. Salon world taught me the value of knowing my client in the chair, their stories, and their comforts- which I then applied to the fashion industry, and it was a hit. I take pride in my chair being a safe space for anyone willing to sit in it!
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
My advice for networking and choosing mentors is simple: Treat every person you come across with the same dignity and respect. Learn their name, story, and role in the space you’re in. When you have downtime, don’t disappear into the phone. Take those moments to interact with your colleagues on a more personal level and build that relationship as far as you can. Lead everything with authenticity and intention, and your people will naturally find you, I promise!
I’d also like to say it’s a small city, so never be disrespectful. If someone is nasty, rude, or is not your friend (because this is reality, and it happens), just find your Zen and stay professional.
