Today we’d like to introduce you to Marcus Brown
Hi Marcus, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
First off I got started having a fish store, so 4 years ago I decided to venture off into exotic fish and what happened was for some of the filtration I would use everyday common houseplants like pothos, peace lily’s, and things like that; and then I got into the more rare, uncommon plants as time went on. But the Deco came from my partner, we were coming up with different ideas for the business when I came to her and told her I wanted to start a plant business. I’m such creative and I love to create, I feel like I’m open minded to other creative ideas and so for me I decided to venture off into art, and mixing art with plants I decided to merge the two and be more bespoke and that’s pretty much how Plant Deco was born.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Umm yes and no, I think that anyone dealing with plants knows that its not always smooth road but its a very rewarding road I would say. It hasn’t been smooth the whole time, I think the main thing for me is that I care about the plants and that’s my focal point. The art and the creativity, all that comes in after I make sure my plants are taken care of. So I feel like plant care is a big, huge part of that road. And it’s never smooth, it’s smooth sometimes but it can definitely get rocky as you know what. So I feel like for me it’s a bit of both.
I think specifically some of the struggles for me has been growth. I feel like for me it’s very important for me to grow, I grow plants, they’re growing, even thriving but it has been a struggle and I have to be transparent about that.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Ummm I would say I do whatever feels right, I think I specialize in being able to create freely and create through who I am and not necessarily who someone may think I am or think I should be. Truthfully I’m known for creating. I’ve very known for my interior design work, I think that that’s one of the things people gravitated to me the fastest for, even with the fish store. I would build fish stands, differently than a lot of people who do D.I.Y.
I think the thing I’m most proud of is my dedication and how adamant I am about knowledge! I’m proud of myself for that because that’s an easy thing for people to just blow off, like whatever. I research and read more, so I’m proud of myself being present enough to understand that if I need to be able to do this in order for me to succeed, then I’m going to do that.
I think the thing that sets me apart from others is my creativity. I create far left, and it’s not to spite anyone or just to be doing something. My brain kinda takes me into a place where its just like if I’m inspired, that inspiration takes me into another place; it doesn’t make me want to do what they did better, or my way or anything, it’s like maybe I should go “here with this” because I have inspiration now. So my inspiration from them, It takes me to a place where I may create something to inspire someone else. So it may be kind of crazy but it works, especially for me, so I feel like it sets me apart because it lets me be who I am. And in the space that a lot of people are not really doing that.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
For anyone just starting out, do what you wanna do! Yeah that’s it, that’s all I got. I wish I knew that I didn’t necessarily have to grow all my plants, especially now that I sell them… initially when I first got into this it wasn’t just about selling plants but adding flair to my interior design work. I wish I would’ve know that because most people that sell plants on a large scale are growers, and I didn’t know that until I get deeper in. Luckily I can pivot and adjust, so I do a little bit of everything in my work now.
The one thing I want to give people is Just be present in the space you’re in! Whether it’s business, family, sports, a job, whatever it is; be present enough to know where you want to go and be understanding of what it takes to get there!
