Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael James Sewell Jr .
Hi Michael, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My journey into acting didn’t start with a plan it started with a decision to change my life.
I left Memphis knowing the lifestyle I was living rapping, trapping, and battling drug addiction was only leading me one direction. I needed something different. I didn’t move to become an actor… acting found me.
My first opportunity came as a background role on *First Wives Club* (BET+), working alongside Jill Scott, RonReaco Lee, and Deborah Cox. At the time, I didn’t know what I was doing I was just present. I was actually about to leave set, but Jill Scott noticed what I was wearing, showed love, and that moment changed everything. Production ended up keeping me on for two months of filming. That was the first time I realized maybe I belonged in this space.
From there, I kept showing up landing roles on *Heels* (Starz) and anything else I could get my hands on. I wasn’t chasing titles, I was chasing growth. I took low-paying roles, no-paying roles whatever it took to build my resume, my discipline, and my name.
By 2023, all that groundwork paid off. I landed my first feature role in the Tubi original *Immortal City Records*. I didn’t have any lines, but it meant everything because it came from a relationship I built with RonReaco Lee, who believed in me enough to open that door.
That momentum carried into my first Supporting Lead role in *BFF’s* (Tubi), and from there, I never looked back.
This journey wasn’t overnight. It was built on sacrifice, relationships, consistency, and faith. I didn’t come into this industry polished I came in real, willing to learn, and committed to becoming better every step of the way.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. When I moved to Atlanta from Memphis, I stepped into the unknown with nothing but faith and determination.
I slept on my Auntie Michele and Uncle Mike’s couch just trying to get on my feet. I didn’t have reliable transportation I was asking for rides to auditions and sets. Financial pressure was real, and at the same time, I was sacrificing time away from my family and my children, which was one of the hardest parts.
There were moments I felt overlooked, watching others move faster, but I stayed locked in on my path. I took background roles, small roles, even low or no-paying work just to stay in the game and keep growing. That consistency led to *The Client* (OG Network), which helped me land my first agent.
I carried what my grandma always told me: *never accept defeat without making an effort.* That mindset kept me going.
In 2024, I took a leap and quit my job at Men’s Wearhouse to pursue acting full-time. I booked 14 roles that year, and by 2025, 12 of them were released. That work led to me winning Breakout Actor of the Year at Ace Honors and Rising Actor of the Year with DCEM. Looking back, every struggle built me and I’m still building.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m an actor dedicated to telling real, grounded stories that reflect life, struggle, growth, and redemption. I specialize in dramatic roles that require emotional depth, authenticity, and vulnerability. Whether I’m portraying internal battles or navigating street realities, I bring truth to every role. My work includes *Three the Hard Way* (Remy Network, Relay, and Tubi), *Sharlotte’s Web*(Tubi), *The Client*(OG Network), *A BestFriend’s Betrayal* (Tubi), *The Price of Love*(Tubi) , and *Tears of a Hustler* Season 3 (Prime, Apple TV, and Tubi) *Secret Lover*, *Blood Thicker Than Water 2* (Tubi), *The Wrong Someone* (Tubi) and my feature role in Tyler Perry’s *Straw* (Netflix) *The Weight Of Karmah* (Tubi) *Don’t Fumble Me Twice*, *Deadly Control*, *Sinful Lies* Co Directed and Co Produced *Da Group Home* Co Produced, *Poly Love In Peach City 1 & 2* (Tubi)
One of my proudest moments was winning the 2026 ACE Honors Award for Best Supporting Male Actor for *Three the Hard Way*, along with being part of a series that won Best Series milestones that reflect years of sacrifice and consistency.
Silk White personally chose me for the role of G-Money. He saw something in me an energy, authenticity, and grit that fit the character perfectly. That trust pushed me to dig deeper, embrace the role fully, and deliver a performance that still resonates with audiences.
Keyboard Money Mike almost didn’t move forward with the film. He told me if I pulled this character off correctly, it could be one of my best performances. That challenge became a turning point. After the release, I was nominated and went on to win Best Supporting Male Actor for *Three the Hard Way*, validating the risk, the grind, and the faith in my craft.
What sets me apart is my journey and authenticity. I built this from the ground up, and I bring real-life experiences, pain, growth, and spiritual grounding into every character. I don’t just act I make people feel. I’m most proud of staying true to myself while continuing to elevate my craft.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
I don’t limit myself to one source of knowledge I take it from everywhere I can. From books, *The Alchemist* taught me to trust the journey, stay patient, and keep pushing no matter what life throws at me. *The 48 Laws of Power* showed me how to read people, navigate the industry, and move strategically without losing myself.
Podcasts? I pull from a wide range mindset, business, life lessons and turn what I hear into action. I don’t just listen; I study, process, and apply it in real time.
I’ve learned this is a “like me” industry sometimes support comes, sometimes it doesn’t but that doesn’t stop you. You can’t let anyone else control your path. What’s meant for you, no one can take, and God’s got the timing. You handle what’s in front of you, you stand your ground, and you keep moving.
Apps like YouTube let me study craft, watch performances, and see how people move. Instagram keeps me connected to the culture, the streets, and what’s real out there. Knowledge is everywhere you just have to grab it and put it to work.
This year, I’m proud to share my work in *Blood Thicker Than Water 2* (Tubi) and *Secret Lover*, as well as *Border Baby* (YouTube). Upcoming projects include *When Worlds Collide*, *Taking Chances*, *The Clean Up*, *What I’d Do for Love*, and more. Each film is an opportunity to grow, challenge myself, and bring authentic stories to life for audiences everywhere.
