Today we’d like to introduce you to Monica Lusk.
Hi Monica, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My story starts a little different than most. I was born and raised in Memphis, Tennessee, In what was considered the second worst neighborhood to live in, In the United States,I started doing hair as a way to express myself through art because I was a terrible at drawing. But I was really good at creating things and making people feel good about themselves through conversation. So after being in the workforce with a few really great jobs, I got sick of the discrimination and decided to work for myself. so I took my savings and opened up my very first hair salon. with five clients who decided they would support me no matter what. since then, I have met a lot of really great people through my community service work of just volunteering my talents for events. such as cuts for kids and battered women. That volunteering introducing me to a guy who work in television and film. He saw something in me that he thought his team could really use, which was my positivity and spirit of just get it done by any means necessary.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It started off really smooth for me in the beginning until I started advancing past people who have been in the industry for a long time and then that’s when I started getting treated really differently.
