Today we’d like to introduce you to Radhika Walia Kujal.
Hi Radhika, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I,Radhika started sketching and painting at an early age, I was born in India and was brought up there till the age of 24years, graduated in Philosophy hons from Delhi University, LSR college.
I got married and moved with my husband to Madrid, Spain.
As a child must have been 5 or 6 years liked to get away from the crowds and be with my watercolours and sketch books most of the time.
In India as we were in a small town, sometimes canvases were not easily available so I would just paint on wooden boards and big Slabs or stones and even use my mothers eyebrow pencils instead of charcoal to sketch and draw as i was keen and my interest was clear.
When in Spain I got busy mostly with bringing up my two kids, teaching in at a school and had very little time to paint, I did put up some exhibitions and sold some work but more to raise funds for a charitable institution.
In 2004 I got unwell could be stress and anxiety and I chose to go and learn some yoga and meditation and trained to teach yoga as well
Also at this point I think I was doing everything but not what I really liked and that was my Art.
We moved to the U.K in 2012 and the children were still in school but grown up and that’s when i decided to dedicate and take out more time for painting and joined the Art organisation locally.
Alongside I taught yoga classes most of the week but regularly started to participate in the annual exhibitions and sold some works and also started to get some commission work.
Once again I was experiencing some low feelings as natures nudge to say follow your heart and attend to your passion to be more aligned to your purpose and once I got that clear I just started to focus more on my creativity.
I recently lost my father, I know he is spiritually with me, he would be very proud of my work and for some reason I just have got more and more into the Art world ever since.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t been a smooth road, specially due to my health, other challenges and responsibilities.
My biggest challenge was my health and that I did not think its important to give any attention to what i really liked and take out time for it earlier so once you know what it is for you know one should just follow ones passion and intuition.
Art balances and brings about an inner harmony and calm for me.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I love to paint nature, trees the sunsets and sunrise the ocean and the landscapes and the countryside that surrounds me.
Fortunately we live outside the city and it’s surrounded by green and good open spaces.
I derive inspiration from my walks in the woods or my travels , the shadows and the sunlight , emotions or upheaval of emotions that outflow.
I specialise in Landscapes and abstract florals and trees and my work is semi-abstract and impressionistic.
I like to use Acrylic paints on canvas as my favourite medium
I am also experiment with inks and water colours as well.
I am different from other as my painting style is distinctive, with bold bright loose brushstrokes and for me each painting emotes the feeling behind it’s coming into being.
