Daily Inspiration: Meet Sarah Rutherford

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Rutherford.

Hi Sarah, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started my styled shoot business over 10 years ago as a creative outlet for myself. At the time, I just wanted a space to bring ideas to life, experiment, and create without limits. What began as something small and personal quickly grew into something so much bigger than I ever expected.

Over the years, it evolved into a deep love for designing unique, editorial-style shoots and curating experiences that feel inspiring and intentional. Along the way, I’ve also built an incredible community of talented vendors and creatives who collaborate, support one another, and truly bring these visions to life.
Today, it’s not just about the shoots themselves but also about the connection, the creativity, and the community that’s been built through it all.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t always been a smooth road. As I’ve grown and taken on bigger shoots and retreats, there have been plenty of challenges along the way. Every level comes with new learning experiences, and I truly believe those moments are what make each shoot better than the last.

There are times it can be stressful. Vendors sometimes drop out last minute, the days can be long, and not every event is profitable. There’s a lot that goes on behind the scenes that people don’t always see. But those challenges have pushed me to become more prepared, adaptable, and intentional with every event I create.

At the end of the day, it’s always worth it for me. The people I get to meet, the relationships that are built, and the incredible content we create together make all of it meaningful.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a wedding photographer and the founder of a styled shoot and retreat company, where I specialize in creating high-end, editorial-style wedding content for photographers and vendors. Over the past 10+ years, I’ve designed and hosted shoots and retreats across the U.S. and internationally, bringing together creatives to collaborate, learn, and build portfolio-worthy work.

I’m known for creating unique, intentionally designed experiences that go beyond just a photoshoot. Every detail is thoughtfully curated, from the location and styling to the color palettes and overall aesthetic, with a strong focus on producing publication-ready content. I also prioritize real connection within the community, creating an environment where photographers and vendors can grow, collaborate, and genuinely support one another.

What I’m most proud of is the community that’s been built through this. It’s not just about the images, but about the relationships, opportunities, and growth that come from being part of something bigger.

What sets me apart is the level of experience and consistency I bring. With over a decade in the industry and countless shoots and retreats hosted, I’ve refined a process that allows creatives to walk away with both incredible content and a meaningful experience.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
essage strong and encouraging:

My biggest piece of advice is to be prepared for things not to go exactly as planned and to learn how to pivot quickly. There are always going to be unexpected challenges, especially in the beginning, and how you handle those moments is what will shape your growth.

Also, understand that your first few shoots or events may not sell out or go perfectly, and that’s okay. It doesn’t mean you’re doing something wrong. It just means you’re building. Consistency and persistence are everything in this industry, and if this is something you truly want to pursue, you have to keep going even when it feels slow or uncertain.

Focus on creating intentionally, building real relationships, and continuing to improve with each shoot. Over time, that momentum compounds into something really powerful.
