Daily Inspiration: Meet Vanessa Smith

Today we’d like to introduce you to Vanessa Smith.

Hi Vanessa, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My mother taught me how to crochet at 12, I started off making blankets. In 2013, I was challenged to make a scarf and that sparked my brand Kakes Kreations. I taught myself how to create clothing designs through the help of YouTube and a lot of imagination.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
One of my biggest challenges was honestly just getting out of my own way. I’m a creative by nature and thrive when I can create. When you’re running a business, it can be difficult to balance creativity and sales. Thankfully God blessed me with this gift and once I started believing in myself- success quickly followed.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a crochet designer and creator. I most often work without a pattern and I love looking at a fashion piece and reimagining it in crochet. I always say I want to change the narrative on fiber fashion. Often when people think about crochet, they think of lacy doilies, grandma sweaters. With the birth of my middle and youngest sons, my speciality has migrated to baby designs. One of my most well-known designs is my recreation of Notorious B.I.G.’s most iconic looks, complete with a crown, sweater, chain and boots. My Hip Hop baby collection most certainly sets me apart from every other crochet artist/designer. I envisioned designs that had never been created and translated them into crochet works of art. Definitely some of my most unique pieces to date. I enjoy creating fashion pieces as well. From one-legged summer sets to a custom monokini and everything in between. My ladies’ fashion line “Bold, Passion Fearless” was showcased in a fiber fashion show in 2019. I created 14 looks in less than three weeks, all without patterns. That is definitely what I’m most proud of. I recently launched my custom gift sets and I’m excited to see what’s next for Kakes Kreations.

What were you like growing up?
I’m the middle child of three. Growing up, I was always somewhere dancing. A little dancing machine. My most favorite thing to do was choreograph routines with my friends.
