Today we’d like to introduce you to Ajona Camile.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
So, I’ve always had a true passion for music in general, so much so, I actually am an artist as well. Simultaneously, I played basketball and studied Forensic Science at SCC & UofA, but it wasn’t until 2010, Winter break of my Junior year where I fully committed to the Music Business. Depressed and completely unmotivated by the school because I got hurt and could no longer play ball, I spontaneously decided I dropped out of school, move to Miami at 20 years young and NEVER looked back!
From there, I hustled and started working with Young Money/Cash Money as a runner/personal assistant to Lil Wayne’s manager- Cortez Bryant. At the time, Lil Wayne had just been incarcerated so the tangible focus shifted on the rising of today’s biggest artists – Drake and Nicki Minaj. Touring the world with the “Big 3” allowed me to really tap into my genius as a Musical Executive. Over the last ten years, I elevated from a Personal Assistant to Executive Assistant, to General Manager, to my current position as Vice President of Operations for The Blueprint Group, CEO/Founder of We Get It Music Group and CO-CEO of The Formula Group.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Minor struggles I’ve experienced along the way have really been the balance of my personal life and being too accessible. Spending a lot of time away from home can also become a drain in itself. But honestly, I’ve been blessed and highly protected throughout my journey to not have experienced your “everyday struggles” as a young black woman in this business. But I will say this… I was hazed for a good eight years! Plenty of tears, many lessons created endless accomplishments and abundance, so it’s a struggle that I now understand and appreciate tremendously none the less!
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I established We Get It Music Group in February of 2018. The name is inspired by a great deal of sarcasm and the classic record “Git Up, Git Out” by my favorite group- Outkast ft Goodie Mobb. Needless to say, that’s exactly what I did because it’s the action “for meee”! So, WGIMG is a multi-media collective and record label whose mission is to empower, innovate, support, and push executive women of color and groundbreaking talent forward in today’s world of entertainment. We Get It Managed, We Get It Published, We Get It Produced, We Get It Booked, and We Get It Donated (Non-Profit) are all currently operating with clients and donations. In February 2021, I closed a distribution deal with InnerCat Music Group giving current and new clientele a home for their creative content.
Something that readers should know is what my core philosophies are… WGIMG is to create gender/race equality amongst label executives, remain innovative to compete, and guarantee clients with the creative freedom. With the blueprint and the formula, we get the business, we get the vision, and we get the bags!… We Get It!
