Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexis K. Turner.
Hi Alexis, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Coming from a rural town like Wadley, GA, I’ve always had big dreams and aspirations. After my dad passed away when I was in the 5th grade from cancer, my mom still continued to work hard and give my brother and I a great childhood. I then became motivated more than ever to make a legacy that my parents would be proud of. Graduating number 3 and top 10% of my high school graduation class, I received a charter scholarship to attend The University of Georgia. Although I graduated with a B.S. in Political Science and B.A. in Philosophy with a sociology minor, I always had a passion for beauty and fashion. My fascination with clothes and make-up came from my mom at a young age. She named me after Alexis Carrington from Dynasty, so she always made sure I was never “half-stepping”. She made sure my shoes matched my purse and bows and kept me in a salon every Saturday. At home for fun, I would imitate Tyra Banks and other fashion models with my hair and style. Deep down, I always wanted to be in the fashion world, but my legal experience was promising, so I thought that would be my career choice.
Rewinding back to my freshman year of college, I had to learn to budget so my beauty and fashion needs had to take a back seat to my scholarly needs. However, I always wanted to change my hair like every week, but being a college student, my bank account didn’t match my aspirations. Still being passionate about the glam life, that is when I came up with the idea of getting my own hair extension company to be affordable and have great quality for girls like me. It wasn’t until post-graduation in 2018, when I was working with the GA House of Representatives as a legislative aide that my mentor encouraged me to start my entrepreneurship. I began my research for vendors and all other demands that would help me have a successful hairline. Once I saved up to invest in my products, I launched my website that summer. I began advertising to my friends and colleagues and got a good response. I was always traveling, but I decided to make my home base Atlanta since the majority of my clientele was from UGA and back home. From there, I started to put my all into Indy Extensions and my other endeavors, which include my fashion and sneaker blog-sneakHER closet and philosophy enrichment- Indy Philosophy. Now through God’s will he started making my vision clearer and my passion greater to now Indy Extensions ships worldwide.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It honestly was a smooth road for me, fortunately. I’m one of those people who explore all options before throwing myself in just to make sure I can avoid any possible obstacles. However, life isn’t perfect. I think my main struggle is being a “One-woman show.” I had to do everything myself, from replenishing products, packaging and shipping, social media advertising, e-commerce and responding to emails. That part overwhelmed me, but I loved it because I am so hands-on with my investments. I also was juggling my legal career and trying to figure out I should still pursue it or go full entrepreneur. However I decided that I will find a way to juggle both, and did.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Indy Extensions is mostly known for its affordable prices and great quality. Being that I started the idea in college, the prices reflected a college student’s budget so that made Indy Extensions consumer-friendly. My brand was widely accepted for that fact alone, as well as the quality and fast shipping. Since I loved to change my hair regularly, I made it my mission that my clients got the same experience. We ship the best quality of virgin hair extensions and units in 2-3 days. The client reviews speak for themselves. Indy Extension also provides an on-hand wig-maker who makes sewing-machine units when purchasing our extensions. I am most proud of how Indy Extensions provides quality that is affordable. That was my main purpose for starting my business and I have stuck to that.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up, I was always like a princess. Ever since my mom bought me the VHS of Brandy’s version of Cinderella, I always wanted to be just like that-smart and beautiful. I also attribute my personality to my zodiac sign, Libra. I am always chasing the best aesthetics and arts. I loved to dress up, do my hair, pick out my outfits that would match from head to toe, or as my mom would say, “I was always in the mirror.” However, I wasn’t always a girly girl. I loved to be in the yard with my dad, play sports, learn arts and crafts and study current events. Basically a balance of both girly and tomboy. Whatever fascinated me, regardless of if it was trendy or not, I explored it. I was interested in music and the arts, as I was 1st chair Clarinet. My personality was friendly and encouraging, no matter what walks of life you came from. Always wanted the best for me and my loved ones, as my name does mean “helper of mankind.” My goal was to have a friend in every state and country, and now that I’m older via social media, I am accomplishing that.
