Today we’d like to introduce you to Courtney Matthews.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’ve always liked numbers. All through school, math came easy to me and I even would tutor my classmates. In high-school, I had to choose an elective for my junior year and accounting was on of the choices. I knew it involved numbers so it was a no-brainer for me. I fell in love! And again, I became the go-to for my classmates to assist with their work. I took Accounting II my senior year and by the time everyone was selecting colleges and considering a major, I already knew what mine would be, Accounting. I would imagine myself being an executive accountant or a partner at a prestigious accounting firm dressed to the nines in skirt suits and a briefcase everyday.
Flash forward to my sophomore year of college and I find myself pregnant and forced to move back home. After having my son, I returned to school and eventually earned associate’s degrees in Accounting and Business Management. But upon my graduation for my bachelor’s degree, I was sucked into the wonderful world of makeup. I was mesmerized and would send hours watching Youtube videos and eventually began to practice on anyone who would let me. This quickly turned into a “thing,” and four months after graduating, I quit my annual but seasonal tax preparer job to pursue a career in makeup. No plan, no money, no business plan, no clients, nothing. Just a friend who believed in me and a newfound passion for life driven by my grandmother’s death a few weeks earlier. I managed to turn it into a five-and-a-half-year career that included two makeup studios, an eyelash line, cosmetic line, apparel line, makeup school and countless students and artists under my tutelage. But yet and still, my initial love of numbers had morphed into tax preparation over the years would be my new focus. I closed my makeup studio, relocated to a new city and was forced to take a job in corporate after almost six years of entrepreneurship. For two years, I worked my 9-5 and built my business to now include seven tax agents, online business training courses, amazing clients and a growing tribe of supporters.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I got pregnant with my son at 19 and had him five days after my 20th birthday. I was the first of my friends to become a mom and I felt like I had failed. But in my mind having him put me on a time clock because I promised I would be done with school by the time he made it to kindergarten. I wanted to be able to be present in his life and to me, that meant time freedom, which is why I gravitated to entrepreneurship. But I ended up missing so many moments just by being so consumed with work and school during that time. It’s like I had a point to prove.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about mCore Tax & Accounting?
We do Tax preparation, bookkeeping, tax accounting, payroll management, and business consulting. My business knowledge in the beauty space has given me the reputation of being a savvy businesswomen. I am extremely disciplined and organized with my business. Over the years, I have become even more laser-focused on my audience and helping them to build a profitable and sustainable business with a strong financial foundation. I am a teacher by nature so I find myself even teaching my clients about taxes and how to understand how their accounting structure needs to be set up.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
Most people don’t know that I am a weather and science fanatic. I am absolutely fascinated by nature and how it functions with no assistance from humans. I can watch weather disasters on Youtube for hours. I once did a project in college that had me to study a full moon cycle and to this day, I can look at the moon and tell you what phase it is in.
