Hi Dr. Lavonia, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I began my professional journey in 2014 while completing my practicum for Mental Health Counseling, where I discovered a passion for supporting and empowering women through consultation and guidance. Drawing on my experience as a daycare owner for more than ten years, I began providing consultations to women interested in starting small businesses, including childcare centers and cleaning services. These early experiences affirmed my desire to serve others in practical and meaningful ways, particularly within my community.
Motivated to deepen my impact, I returned to school to pursue formal training in psychology, earning my bachelor’s degree followed by a master’s degree, and I just currently completed my doctoral degree. In 2016, with a clear vision and an initial investment of just $500, I founded LSB Consulting Services. Over time, the practice grew steadily, both in scope and in purpose, and by 2025 it evolved into LSB Consulting and Counseling Services to reflect its expanded clinical focus and commitment to mental health care.
Today, I maintain a consistent and diverse client base, and this work has become more than a profession—it is my calling. My journey has been guided by faith, perseverance, and an unwavering commitment to my goals, even during challenging seasons. With God’s help and a refusal to give up on my dreams, I have continued to grow personally and professionally. While I am proud of how far I have come, I remain committed to learning, evolving, and expanding my service, knowing there is still meaningful work ahead.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No, the journey has not been a smooth road. Along the way, I faced financial uncertainty, academic demands, and the challenge of building a professional practice while continuing my education and managing personal responsibilities. Starting my business with limited resources required faith, resilience, and persistence, especially during seasons when growth was slow and self-doubt emerged. Balancing graduate-level coursework, clinical training, and entrepreneurship often tested my endurance, but these challenges strengthened my discipline and clarified my purpose. Through each obstacle, my faith in God and my commitment to never giving up on my dreams sustained me, allowing me to grow not only as a professional, but also as a person who understands that struggle is often part of preparation rather than failure.

One surprising fact that many people may not know is that I recently wrote and published my first children’s book, making me a first-time author in my immediate family. This achievement represents a meaningful personal and professional milestone, as it reflects both my commitment to education and my desire to create resources that positively impact children and families. Writing the book challenged me in new ways, strengthened my voice as an educator and advocate, and reminded me that growth often comes from stepping into unfamiliar spaces with faith and perseverance.
