Today we’d like to introduce you to Elbonie Hornbuckle-Preston.
Hi Elbonie, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Growing up, I always knew I would be in the health field. My mom was a registered pediatric nurse and I spent countless hours roaming the halls of the hospital. I planned that I would become a physical therapist. I finished up my Bachelors of Science Degree from Tuskegee University. And quickly discovered my plans and Gods plan for my career did not match and he redirected me to Chiropractic school in which I started at Life University in Marietta, GA and finished up at Sherman College of Straight Chiropractic in Spartanburg, SC. I worked as an associate chiropractor for several months after graduation in 2005. Opened Loving Care Family Chiropractic in downtown Stone Mountain in October 2006 and have been striving to reach, teach and care for my community ever since…
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Smooth, what is that? I am a young African American female in an older Caucasian male profession. Less than 10% of the population currently sees a chiropractor; that means the other 90% don’t know what a chiropractor is or does or who they treat who they can help.
And of course, in school, you aren’t taught enough of the business to help yourself grow, so unless you have an amazing mentor and support group, you are bound to fail. Chiropractic is a hustle… and even coming up on 15 years, I still am and have to be grinding everyday to ensure I survive and become more successful.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
The name Loving Care Family Chiropractic means just that. I provide Loving Care to the entire Family no matter their injuries via Chiropractic means. Educating the patient on their issue, and more specifically, how to prevent it from happening again. My main goal as a chiropractor is to determine if there are any misalignments within the spine; those areas that are misaligned will eventually put pressure on the surrounding nerves and cause the symptoms (neck pain, back pain, numbness, tingling, headaches, etc.) that we feel. As I have grown in practice, I have seen the detrimental effects of bad posture on the spine. So I am very diligent in focusing on posture and teaching its effects. I try very hard to keep a good balance between Wellness patients and Personal Injury patients.
Treating: Car Crash Injuries, Sports Injuries, Slip and Falls, Neck and Back Pain, Numbness and Tingling in Arms/Hands, Legs/Feet, Scoliosis, Headaches, Posture Issues, Sinus Issues, Pregnancy, Sciatica.
The thing that sets me apart from others; I take my time with the patients, I listen to their concerns, we work on their goals, and if they need a referral, I send them out. The environment is peaceful, I am gentle and patient, and I have not done my job until you are waking up saying, “I think I feel asleep.”
I am an African American Female Christian Office taking care of the entire family; newborns, toddlers, teenagers, adults and geriatrics patients. Office hours: Tues, Wed, Thurs 9 am-6 pm.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I don’t believe in luck; I believe all my steps have been preordained since before birth by God… One step definitely set in motion by him was how I ended up in Chiropractic. I thought my path would be Physical Therapy; so much so I had completed more than enough volunteer hours for my application, I knew the Dean of the school I was to apply, and I had literally been working (off the books) in a physical therapy office for three years every break I had from college. I took the PT entrance exam and failed by 3 points; I’m sure I could have easily studied and took over. But the desire I had for PT was gone and I didn’t know what that meant. Several days later, I received a phone call from some chiropractors I had met at a career fair two years earlier and swore I wasn’t gonna be because I was going to be a Physical Therapist. My eyes were now open to new profession. I applied to 2 schools and was accepted to both and the rest is history… I’m glad I was listening…
