Hi Kimberly, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Since I was a little girl, I was always the one with the Polaroid or disposable camera in my hand, capturing moments and memories. I didn’t know it then, but that little girl was already discovering her passion.

As I grew older, that love for photography never left. My husband, Sheldon,and three children (Imani, Sheldon II, and Simeon) later gifted me a “fancy” Canon camera, and that gift allowed me to elevate what had always been a hobby into something more intentional. It gave me the confidence to explore my creativity at a higher level.

During the COVID era, I continued taking pictures everywhere. From athletic events, senior nights, family gatherings; anywhere there was a moment to capture. At the time, I was a high school math teacher, but we knew we wanted to make the business official. My husband,Sheldon, and I completed all the necessary steps to establish the business at the county and state level, and we invested in a 360 Photo Booth. We had actually never been on a 360 Photo Booth before purchasing one, but after doing our research, we knew it was exactly what we needed to create an experience where guests could instantly walk away with a captured memory.

Fast forward to today, Kapturing Moments by Kim is blessed to serve as a vendor for school proms, weddings, family celebrations, parties, and corporate events. What started as a childhood passion has grown into a full family business. Now ,as an assistant principal and my husband an educator, we still get to fulfill both our careers and build our family business. I am an active life member of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. and Sheldon is a life member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. and we are active at our church home Ebenezer Baptist Church West in Athens, GA, so time management is a huge part of managing our business.

One of our biggest goals has always been to create something meaningful for our children. They are our main employees, and they get to see firsthand what it looks like to have a vision, build it from the ground up, and put in the hard work to sustain it. God has truly been with us every step of the way, and we don’t take that for granted.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road, but it has been incredibly rewarding.

One of the biggest challenges has honestly been managing fear and doubt; especially when it comes to investing in the business. Every piece of equipment is an investment, and with that comes the question: Is this the right time? Are we overextending? We’ve had to be very intentional about pacing our purchases so that we enhance the experience for our clients without putting unnecessary financial strain on our family.

Balancing full-time careers while building a business also requires discipline. Time management is critical. There are moments when we have to slow down, regroup, and make sure we are operating wisely.

Behind the scenes, technology can also be unpredictable. The 360 and selfie booths depend heavily on strong internet and functioning equipment, so when things get quirky, we have to pivot fast. Those moments test you, but they also build confidence. We’ve learned to prepare, have backup plans, and remain calm under pressure.

Fear and doubt may show up, but they don’t lead. We move forward prayerfully, strategically, and with purpose. Every challenge has strengthened us and reminded us why we started Kapturing Moments by Kim in the first place.

For anyone just starting out, my biggest advice is simple: step out on faith. Don’t wait until every detail is perfectly aligned before you begin. If you wait for perfection, you may never start. The beauty of building something of your own is that you can refine and adjust along the way. It’s your vision, your business, and your journey. You have the freedom to evolve as you grow.

Once we completed the necessary paperwork to formally establish our business, we were intentional about presenting ourselves professionally. We designed a logo and had branded polos embroidered so that from the moment we stepped into an event, our professionalism was visible. Every detail reflected our mission and vision. We understood that how we showed up mattered just as much as the service we provided.

Another invaluable lesson is the importance of building your network. Surround yourself with people who are willing to share knowledge and experience. A friend once gave me practical advice on how to invoice clients seamlessly; something that would have saved me time and stress had I known it from the start. Don’t hesitate to ask questions and learn from others. Entrepreneurship may begin with a leap of faith, but it is sustained through community, preparation, and the courage to keep going.
