Today we’d like to introduce you to Alli Boumeester.
Alli, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’ve loved bulldogs for more than 20 years, but Gemstone Bulldogges was born from something much deeper than simply wanting to breed dogs. It came from a desire to help preserve and improve one of the most incredible breeds I’ve ever known.
Early on, I realized I didn’t want to produce puppies—I wanted to produce exceptional companions. That meant dedicating myself to learning everything I could about genetics, structure, nutrition, temperament, early neurological development, and canine behavior. Every year, I continue to invest in education and surround myself with mentors, veterinarians, geneticists, behaviorists, and experienced breeders who challenge me to keep improving.
Today, Gemstone Bulldogges is built around one simple philosophy: every generation should be better than the last.
We carefully plan each breeding using health testing, PennHIP evaluations, genetic screening, and pedigree analysis. We also work closely with genetic specialists to thoughtfully pair dogs that complement one another, preserving and strengthening the qualities that matter most.
While structure and health are incredibly important, temperament is equally essential. We intentionally breed for stable, confident, people-oriented dogs because our vision extends far beyond producing beautiful bulldogs. A growing part of our program is producing dogs capable of becoming service dogs, therapy dogs, and emotional support companions. That requires intelligence, resilience, sound nerves, and an unwavering desire to connect with people. We believe temperament is inherited just as much as it is nurtured.
Our puppies are raised in our home using our Platinum Puppy™ Program, which focuses on nutrition, confidence building, early socialization, behavior, and lifelong health. I believe healthy dogs are built from the inside out, and that the first 12 weeks of a puppy’s life shape the next 12 years.
But my greatest passion isn’t just producing beautiful bulldogs—it’s producing dogs that become beloved family members. Dogs that are healthy enough to hike, travel, compete in sports, assist someone with a disability, comfort a person in need, or simply be someone’s best friend for many years.
Watching families fall in love with their Gemstone puppy and knowing we’ve helped create that bond is the most rewarding part of what I do. Every puppy that leaves here carries not only generations of thoughtful breeding, but also a piece of my heart.
Gemstone Bulldogges isn’t just a breeding program. It’s a lifelong commitment to the breed, to the families who trust us, and to continually raising the standard for what responsible breeding can look like.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Like any worthwhile journey, building Gemstone Bulldogges has been filled with both incredible highs and difficult lows. Responsible breeding isn’t easy, and it certainly isn’t always profitable.
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that you have to be willing to make hard decisions for the sake of the breed. Early in my program, I purchased a promising stud that later developed behavioral issues. I worked closely with his breeder and even participated in virtual training sessions with their recommended trainer, but ultimately his temperament wasn’t what I wanted representing my program. He was lovingly placed in a pet home instead.
Another stud I had high hopes for was diagnosed with bone cancer and passed away at just two years old. I’ve also retired females from my program because they didn’t meet my standards—whether it was due to structural concerns, size, or developing a hereditary condition like entropion. Every one of those decisions came with emotional and financial loss, but I firmly believe that if we knowingly breed dogs with traits we don’t want passed to the next generation, we’re failing the breed.
Those experiences shaped my philosophy. Health and temperament aren’t marketing terms—they’re the foundation of every decision I make. Sometimes the hardest choice is also the most responsible one.
The breeding world can also be surprisingly challenging. It’s incredibly rewarding, but it can also be competitive and, at times, political. I’ve learned that not everyone who offers advice has your best interests at heart. Along the way, I’ve developed a much stronger sense of who I am as a breeder and the vision I have for my program.
One saying I live by is, “Just because you don’t like the meal I’m serving doesn’t mean you’re not welcome at my table.” The Olde English Bulldogge is a composite breed, and breeders often have very different visions of what the ideal dog should be. I respect those differences, but I’ve chosen to stay true to my own priorities: health, temperament, sound structure, and producing dogs capable of living long, active lives as cherished family members—and in some cases, even service dogs.
One of the more emotional aspects of breeding is experiencing loss. We’ve been fortunate to lose very few puppies over the years, but it never becomes easier. What has fascinated me, though, is watching the mother dogs. Puppies that are born sleeping are often immediately recognized by the dam, who instinctively understands they have passed. On the rare occasions when we’ve had fading puppies, both the mother and father seemed to sense what was happening long before we wanted to accept it. They would stay close, almost as if asking us to help, and once the puppy was gone, they peacefully moved on.
As humans, we grieve deeply because we imagine the life that could have been. Dogs seem to accept the natural cycle in a way that’s both heartbreaking and humbling. They’ve taught me as much about resilience as I’ve ever taught them.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Gemstone Bulldogges is a preservation-focused Olde English Bulldogge breeding program based in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Our mission is simple: to produce healthier, more structurally sound, and temperamentally exceptional bulldogs that can thrive as lifelong family companions—and, in many cases, service or therapy dogs.
What sets us apart is that we don’t believe breeding begins when two dogs are paired. It begins years before that through studying pedigrees, evaluating structure, health testing, and working alongside genetic specialists to make thoughtful breeding decisions. Every pairing is intentional, with the goal that each generation is healthier and better than the last.
Temperament is at the heart of everything we do. A beautiful dog means very little if it doesn’t have the confidence, stability, and desire to be a true companion. Because one of our long-term goals is to produce dogs capable of service work, we place just as much emphasis on character as we do on structure and health.
Our puppies remain with us until 12 weeks of age and are raised through Platinum Puppy™ Program, which combines early neurological stimulation, purposeful socialization, premium nutrition, confidence building, and professional behavioral development. We believe the first 12 weeks of a puppy’s life shape the next 12 years, so we invest an incredible amount of time into giving every puppy the strongest possible foundation.
Gemstone Bulldogges is truly a family endeavor. My husband and our three daughters are involved every step of the way, helping raise each litter with love, patience, and purpose. From daily handling and socialization to the countless little moments that help puppies build trust and confidence, our dogs are raised in a real family environment. I believe those everyday interactions help shape emotionally stable, people-focused companions that transition beautifully into their forever homes.
Nutrition is another cornerstone of our program. We believe healthy dogs are built from the inside out, which is why we emphasize premium nutrition, gut health, immune support, and appropriate supplementation from pregnancy through puppyhood.
Perhaps what I’m most proud of is that our relationship with our families doesn’t end when a puppy goes home—it truly begins. Every family becomes part of the Gemstone Bulldogges community and receives lifelong breeder support. We celebrate milestones together, answer questions years later, and, when needed, connect families with trusted professionals in behavior, training, nutrition, and health to ensure every dog has the opportunity to thrive.
Ultimately, I don’t want Gemstone Bulldogges to be known simply for producing beautiful bulldogs. I want us to be known for raising the standard of responsible breeding by proving that health, temperament, education, and lifelong support should always come before profit. My goal is to leave the Olde English Bulldogge breed better than I found it and to produce dogs that enrich the lives of the families who welcome them home.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
If I had to choose one quality that’s been most important to my success, it would be conviction—having the courage to stay true to my vision even when it’s the harder path.
In the breeding world, there are countless opinions about what the “perfect” dog should look like. It can be tempting to follow trends or make decisions based on popularity or profit, but I’ve learned that lasting success comes from staying committed to your principles.
For me, that means putting health, temperament, and longevity above everything else. I’ve retired promising dogs from my breeding program because they didn’t meet the standards I set for the future of the breed. Those decisions have been emotionally difficult and financially costly, but I’ve never regretted choosing what’s right over what’s easy.
I also believe that success requires humility. No one ever knows everything, especially when working with living animals. I constantly seek out new research, collaborate with veterinarians, geneticists, and behaviorists, and continue learning because there’s always room to improve.
Finally, I believe passion is contagious. If you’re genuinely committed to making something better than you found it, people recognize that. My goal has never been to produce the most puppies or become the biggest breeder. My goal is to leave a meaningful legacy by producing healthier, more stable Olde English Bulldogges and helping families experience the incredible bond these dogs can bring into their lives.
At the end of the day, success isn’t measured by ribbons, sales, or social media followers. It’s measured by the quality of the dogs we produce, the lives they enrich, and the positive impact we leave on the breed for generations to come.
