Hidden Gems: Meet Brandon King of Olympian Surgical Assistants, LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brandon King.

Hi Brandon, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started my career in the U.S. Air Force in 1995, graduating from the Surgical Services Program and stepping straight into the operating room. As a surgical assistant, I serve as the surgeon’s second set of hands—managing exposure, handling key intraoperative tasks, and closing the incision once the case is complete.

During my Air Force tenure, I worked in hospitals across Texas, Nebraska, Nevada, and Ohio. Outside the operating room, I hustled—moonlighting as an EMT, an orthotist, and even a personal trainer to broaden my skills and make ends meet.

After completing my service with the Air Force, I moved to Atlanta and founded Olympian Surgical Assistants. When surgeons need an extra hand, their offices call us—we coordinate experienced surgical assistants to support cases across multiple specialties. Olympian Surgical Assistants currently partners with several hospitals and surgery centers throughout the Atlanta area.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
When I started out in the operating room, there were few African American men in my profession. That isolation came with a heavy cost — racism was a constant companion. I’ll never forget a Colonel telling me once “I will send you back to the ghetto if it’s the last thing I ever do!” He failed.

These encounters didn’t stop me but only fueled my will to succeed. I learned to walk carefully and work relentlessly. I studied every surgery the night before, memorizing each step so I could anticipate the surgeon’s moves. I arrived early, stayed late, and made sure my performance left no room for anyone to question whether I belonged.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Olympian Surgical Assistants, LLC?
Olympian Surgical Assistants is a staffing agency that places surgical assistants with surgeons. Surgeons often need an extra pair of hands to ensure the case goes smoothly. Our group is different because we are staffed assistants of all backgrounds, including Physicians Assistants (PA), Certified Surgical Assistants (CSA), Certified Surgical First Assistants (CSFA), Registered Nurse First Assistants (RNFA) and Foreign Medical Graduates (FMG). We specialize in Neurosurgery and Orthopedic surgery but also service Plastic surgery and General surgery. We currently assist surgeons in almost 20 Hospitals and Surgery Centers in Atlanta and the surrounding cities.

How do you think about luck?
I have had good luck and bad luck with my business throughout my career. When I started my business, I had no one to guide me, and I ended up making a lot of mistakes. Fortunately through luck and the grace of God, things have worked out. Now, I am beyond fortunate to have a thriving business, and I strive to be an advocate for others in my field and for educating the next generation. I am the founder and President of the Georgia Society of Surgical Assistants (GSSA), Vice President of the National Surgical Assistant Association (NSAA), and play an active role in propelling the newly created American Academy of Surgical Assistants (AASA). My mission is to connect those in my field in order to advance the field of surgery through education and political advocacy.
