Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Eva Beaulieu.
Hi Dr. Beaulieu, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. Growing up, I was surrounded by doctors. My father was a Radiologist and my Mother was a Dermatologist. As a little girl, I watched both of my parents care for patients and run their own practices. I don’t think there was a specific day or event that I said I would become a doctor. I think I always knew that I would grow up to save lives. It was an organic decision. Fast forward many years later: I am now an Internal Medicine Hospitalist, and my goal is to inspire others to reach their dreams. African American women make up about 2% of doctors in the United States, and I believe that if it can happen for me, it can happen for others. And I am thrilled to help others get there.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
I want students to know that for me, it hasn’t been an easy road. I’ve worked extremely hard to get to where I am today. There were no shortcuts, and although both of my parents were doctors, I had to earn my place just like everyone else. I labored relentlessly to accomplish my goals: it was intense studying, countless volunteer hours, and long internships.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
A lot of us wind up so scared of financial distress or disrupting the status quo that we stay stuck in unfulfilling jobs or situations. That can be paralyzing, especially if you’re not following your true passion.
Each of us is born with a unique life purpose. If there’s one thing I’ve learned in my short life, is to be unapologetic but calculated in your moves and just go for it. Make life work for you the way you want it to. I did, and now I want to help others too. And so I created Dr. Eva B Coaching and Consulting to help those trying to figure out where they want to be in life, how they want to accomplish their goals, the steps they need to take to become a doctor, how to create a balanced life, advice on the pre-med pathway, etc…
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
My favorite childhood memory was when my mom would take me to work with her if there was no school. I watched her care for patients, listen to them, treat their ailments and advise them about their health. I watched her run a business and had firsthand knowledge of what it was like to earn a living by helping others. She was caring and, hands down, my hero!
