Today we’d like to introduce you to Heather Pennington.
Hi Heather, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Like a lot of people, my path wasn’t a straight line. Early on, I knew I was curious, creative, and interested in business, but I didn’t have one clear career mapped out. While in college, I explored several different roles and industries because I wanted real-world experience and to understand what I genuinely enjoyed. Those early experiences taught me a lot about people, operations, customer service, branding, and business from multiple perspectives.
A pivotal moment came in 2000 when I had the opportunity to represent Kennesaw State University in the New Ventures World Competition alongside schools like Duke, Yale, and Harvard. That experience became the catalyst for launching my first company, Day Three Media. Building and running that business for 16 years gave me hands-on experience in entrepreneurship, leadership, marketing & branding, operations, and the realities of scaling a company. Eventually, I sold the business, which opened the door to my next chapter.
In 2016, I founded I Speak Business as a business and marketing consulting firm focused on helping organizations grow strategically through branding, marketing, business development, training, and operational support. Since then, I’ve had the opportunity to work with clients across many industries including finance and wealth advisory, healthcare, construction, higher education, legal, and professional services. I love that no two projects are ever the same.
My career has definitely had its share of challenges, pivots, and lessons learned, but each experience has shaped how I lead and serve clients today. What has remained constant is my passion for helping businesses tell their story, strengthen their brand, and create long-term growth. I believe business is deeply personal, your company is often an extension of who you are and that’s why I focus not only on strategy, but also on relationships, communication, and vision.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Not at all…entrepreneurship is rarely a smooth road, and my journey has definitely come with its share of challenges. Building a business from the ground up taught me quickly that success is never just about having a great idea; it’s about resilience, adaptability, and the willingness to keep moving forward when things don’t go according to plan.
Like many entrepreneurs, I faced the challenges of wearing multiple hats in the early years, handling operations, sales, client relationships, marketing, finances, and leadership all at once. There were seasons of uncertainty, long hours, difficult decisions, and moments where I had to figure things out in real time without a clear roadmap. That said, I believe the struggles have been some of my greatest teachers. They’ve strengthened my leadership, sharpened my perspective, and deepened my understanding of what businesses truly need to succeed. Looking back, I wouldn’t trade those challenges because they’ve shaped both who I am and how I serve others today.
As you know, we’re big fans of I Speak Business. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
I Speak Business is a business and marketing consulting firm focused on helping organizations grow with greater clarity, strategy, and purpose. We work with businesses across a wide range of industries including finance/wealth advisory, healthcare, legal, construction, higher education, and professional services to strengthen their brand, improve operations, and create intentional growth strategies. Our services go beyond traditional marketing. While branding, digital marketing, content strategy, website development, and social media are important parts of what we do, we also support clients with business development, sales strategy, team training, customer experience, operational consulting, and leadership development. At our core, we help businesses connect the dots between who they are, how they operate, and how they communicate their value to the marketplace. What sets I Speak Business apart is our holistic approach. We don’t believe marketing exists in a vacuum. A company can have beautiful branding and strong campaigns, but if operations, internal communication, sales processes, or customer experience are misaligned, growth becomes difficult to sustain. We help businesses look at the full picture so their brand and business strategy work together. We’re also known for being highly relationship driven and customized in our approach. There is no one-size-fits-all solution in business, so we spend time understanding each client’s goals, challenges, audience, and long-term vision before making recommendations. Brand wise, what I’m most proud of is the trust and reputation we’ve built. I Speak Business has grown through relationships, referrals, and long-term partnerships, which speaks volumes about the impact of our work. We’ve built a brand centered around credibility, practical strategy, creative problem-solving, and genuine investment in our clients’ success. What I want readers to know is that I Speak Business exists to help organizations work smarter, communicate more effectively, and grow with intention. We’re passionate about helping businesses not only look good externally, but also function well internally so they can create sustainable success.
How do you define success?
I define success as building a life and business that feels aligned, meaningful, and fully lived. For me, success has never been solely about titles, revenue, or external recognition although those things can certainly reflect hard work and growth. Real success is waking up each day with purpose, knowing that I’m creating something meaningful, making an impact, and living in a way that feels authentic to who I am. As both a woman and an entrepreneur, I’ve learned that success evolves over time. Earlier in my career, I probably measured it more by achievement, milestones, and proving to myself that I could build something substantial. While I still value ambition and growth, my definition has deepened. Now, success is also about freedom, freedom to choose how and who I spend my time, who I work with, what I create, and how I show up in the world. I’m someone who believes life is meant to be experienced fully. I want to be present for the big moments and the quiet ones, to keep learning, growing, exploring, and challenging myself. Success means not postponing joy or waiting for “someday” to start living. It’s about finding fulfillment in the journey while continuing to pursue bigger visions. At the end of the day, I think success is living with intention, courage, and gratitude, building something you’re proud of while also creating a life you genuinely enjoy waking up to.
