Today we’d like to introduce you to James Scott Jr.
Hi James, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey started out with my dad having a house full of fish aquariums. I love animals of all sorts so being that we were in an apartment, a fish aquarium was the only pet I could maintain. In 2001 at the age of 14, I learned from watching my dad clean and add fish and numerous aquariums. My first fish was a few mollies and goldfish, I was very proud of my first setup until I woke up the next morning and all my fish were dead. I was sad but at the same time determined to have fish in my aquarium.
The next morning I got up pretty early, cleaned the aquarium thoroughly, added my chemicals and let the aquarium acclimate. The next morning came and my dad came over with some new fish, I tested the water before introducing the new fish and water conditions were perfect. In 2014 I began posting my aquariums on social media and my pictures were being admired by my friends. I was asked if I could come out and fix up their aquariums and perform the maintenance on them. I’ve always taken before and after pictures of my work, so I began to upload my work on social media after every job. My apartment was full of aquariums and different variations of fish, up to ten aquariums at once. A few years later, I moved into my house and that meant bigger aquariums and then my clientele increased drastically. In 2020 Covid arrived and my hours decreased at my job, therefore, made me more available to start my company that is known as Aquatic Wonders.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Of course not but nothing in life is smooth if you want something bad enough, you’ll work towards it. A few obstacles I’ve faced were going into a customer’s apartment but there wasn’t a water connection for my hose. So that meant filling up a 150-gallon aquarium with buckets. At the time, starting out I had a small car and moving fish aquariums wasn’t so easy but I made it work. Struggle brings progress whether you succeed or fail, you either advance or learn from it. If you learn from it, remember that mistakes are proof are proof that you are trying.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up, I was a very enthusiastic young man. I was very hands-on, from working on cars with my dad to working with him on weekends cutting grass. I always had some sort of pet from dogs, rats, fish, etc. I always wanted to learn new things. I’ve had jobs since the age of 13. I never been a stranger to hard work, my parents taught me well.
