Today we’d like to introduce you to Julie Turney
Hi Julie, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My journey in the world of Human Resources began over 15 years ago, driven by a deep passion for people and a desire to create positive workplace environments. Starting as an HR assistant, I quickly realized the profound impact that HR professionals can have on both individuals and organizations. This realization fueled my commitment to personal and professional growth within the field.
Over the years, I gained experience in various HR roles, from recruitment to employee relations, and eventually moved into leadership positions. Along the way, I encountered the challenges that many HR professionals face, including burnout, compassion fatigue, and workplace trauma. These experiences not only shaped my understanding of HR but also ignited a new passion: supporting HR professionals in their own journeys.
In November 2020, I founded HRatHeart Consulting Inc., a firm dedicated to helping HR professionals navigate their careers healthily and sustainably. Through coaching, workshops, and retreats, I provide the tools and support needed to thrive in this demanding field. My book, “Confessions of an HR Pro: Stories of Defeat and Triumph,” and my podcast, HR Sound Off, further extend my mission to share knowledge and build a supportive HR community.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It was definitely not a smooth road. Getting HR professionals to admit that they are not okay is not as easy as you would think. There is often a stigma attached to showing vulnerability, especially in a profession that is typically seen as the support system for others. This reluctance to seek help was one of the initial hurdles I faced.
When I founded HRatHeart Consulting Inc. in November 2020, I utilized various platforms like LinkedIn to share my story and the services I offer. Despite my efforts, getting clients through the door was challenging at first. Many HR professionals were hesitant to reach out, even though they were experiencing burnout, compassion fatigue, and workplace trauma.
To overcome this, I decided to use my voice more actively. I began speaking at events on the topics of HR burnout and self-care, sharing my own experiences and the importance of addressing these issues. Slowly but surely, this approach started to resonate with people. By being open and honest about my journey and the struggles I faced, I was able to connect with HR professionals on a deeper level.
Gradually, I began to see a change. More HR professionals started to reach out, recognizing the importance of taking care of their mental and emotional well-being. These connections not only helped my business grow but also reaffirmed my commitment to making a difference in the HR community.
Today, I am proud to say that my client base is worldwide. HR professionals from various parts of the globe seek my guidance and support. While the road has been bumpy, each challenge has strengthened my resolve and honed my ability to support those who need it most. The journey has been far from smooth, but every struggle has been a step toward creating a more supportive and resilient HR community.
We’ve been impressed with HRatHeart Consulting Inc., but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
The HR industry is poised for significant transformation over the next 5-10 years, driven by technological advancements, evolving workforce dynamics, and an increased focus on employee well-being. Here are some key shifts and trends I anticipate:
Integration of Technology and AI: The adoption of artificial intelligence and machine learning will continue to revolutionize HR processes. From recruitment and onboarding to performance management and employee engagement, technology will enable more efficient and data-driven decision-making. AI will help HR professionals personalize employee experiences, predict workforce trends, and automate routine tasks, freeing up time for more strategic initiatives.
Emphasis on Employee Well-being: The importance of mental health and well-being in the workplace will become even more pronounced. Organizations will invest in comprehensive well-being programs that address physical, emotional, and mental health. This shift will include more flexible work arrangements, increased access to mental health resources, and initiatives to reduce burnout and promote work-life balance.
Focus on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI): DEI will remain a critical focus area, with organizations striving to create more inclusive and equitable workplaces. There will be a continued push for diverse hiring practices, inclusive leadership development, and the creation of cultures where all employees feel valued and respected. Measuring and holding leaders accountable for DEI progress will become standard practice.
Remote and Hybrid Work Models: The COVID-19 pandemic has permanently changed the way we work. Remote and hybrid work models will continue to evolve, with organizations offering flexible work options to attract and retain top talent. This shift will require HR professionals to develop new strategies for managing remote teams, fostering virtual collaboration, and maintaining company culture across distributed workforces.
Continuous Learning and Development: Lifelong learning will become a cornerstone of career development. As the pace of technological and industry change accelerates, employees will need to continuously upskill and reskill to stay relevant. HR will play a crucial role in creating and promoting learning opportunities, leveraging technology to deliver personalized and accessible training programs.
Enhanced Employee Experience: There will be a greater emphasis on designing exceptional employee experiences. Organizations will focus on creating meaningful and engaging work environments that align with employees’ values and aspirations. This trend will include leveraging employee feedback, fostering a sense of purpose, and providing opportunities for growth and development.
Overall, the HR industry will continue to evolve, with a strong focus on leveraging technology, enhancing employee well-being, and creating inclusive and flexible work environments. HR professionals will need to be agile, forward-thinking, and committed to continuous improvement to navigate these changes successfully.
Through these initiatives, HRatHeart Consulting Inc. will be at the forefront of supporting HR professionals as they navigate the evolving landscape of the HR industry. Our commitment to innovation, well-being, and continuous improvement will ensure that HR professionals are well-equipped to meet the challenges and opportunities ahead.
