Today we’d like to introduce you to Kimberly Abad.
Kimberly, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
As a high school educator and a mentor for over 15 years, I knew that I had something that young girls needed. So, when the decision was made to abruptly ended face to face instruction, I was gifted with time. During this time, I was able to dig deep and write “Dear Black Girl” as well as start Tutoring Matters, LLC. Dear Black Girl was written for young girls ages 11-18 (although some adult women have greatly benefited from the book as well). Dear Black Girl is merely a guide to offer black girls a different perspective and to add to what they already know. I also hope to shed some light on that which is unknown and tap into untapped inner thoughts. It is my desire that every black girl who reads my book finds something valuable that can be taken away or tucked inside. I hope to plant seeds and allow life to water those seeds. And when those seeds are ready to bloom, she will blossom in full force – becoming the beautiful, amazing, strong, intelligent black girl she was created to be. Frederick Douglass said it best: “It’s easier to build strong children than repair broken men.”
Also, during the pandemic, Tutoring Matters, LLC was birthed. My efforts to bridge the gap started very small, with me tutoring students at school. It then grew to me being able to serve small groups of students at the local library. Now, Tutoring Matters has it’s own space in the community where I can better teach and guide students at the level in which they need to be reached. Tutoring Matters is a great option for students right now because of the way that delivery and instruction has changed. While educators are doing their best to meet the needs of all students, there are still some who are struggling to adapt to virtual learning and others who are not being challenged enough. Tutoring Matters is not only for students who struggle but for gifted students who need to be pushed more. The opportunity for young person to gain confidence in their ability to communicate effectively and comprehend the world around them is priceless. Now, even more than ever before, knowledge matters. Educating the adults of tomorrow matters. Tutoring matters.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road has been busy yet smooth. I couldn’t have asked for a better journey.
As you know, we’re big fans of Tutoring Matters. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Tutoring Matters is a locally based small business in Macon, GA. We offer tutoring and test prep services, specializing in the areas of reading and writing. As a certified educator with over 15 years of experience, I saw the need in our community for targeted reading and writing instruction to supplement the general curriculum. As a teacher, I was able to get a first-and look into how many students have fallen between the cracks and are not reading on grade level by the time they reach high school. With a fast-paced learning environment and heavy emphasis placed on testing achievement, it’s possible for students to miss out on foundational reading and writing skills. One of the things that set Tutoring Matters apart from the rest is my ability to build relationships with students, parents, and community members to build a village to help foster the growth of our children holistically. I am most proud to be the CEO as well as the head tutor. I love the fact that I get that one-on-one experience with every student that I service as well. I also love how the confidence of the students I service gradually elevates over time and they become empowered, focused, and competent. My services are affordable and will always remain the same no matter what.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
One of the things that has worked well for me is remaining true to my vision and myself.
