Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Cook.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Physical Culture, as we define it, is improvement of the mind through education and study of the body. Our studio is truly a product of this premise. Although the mind-body connection is spoken about quite often, we believe that the mind and the body are not separate. We believe them to be one thing with no separation and no difference between them. We continue to find that physical path is the most direct and salient way to emotional well-being. With our combined 50 years of teaching experience, we have sought out intelligent tools and integrated techniques to deliver what we consider to be the first requisites of joy.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
That depends on your definition of smooth. This has been our lifelong work, so we have had plenty of time and opportunity to navigate life’s bumps. We have five boys, ranging in age from age 6 to 15, and a business that we run together. Probably the most obvious and recent hurdle is owning a very much in-person business during the pandemic. We signed a lease for a much larger space on the same day that everything shut down in 2020, never anticipating the enormity of what was to come. Although these past two years have been immensely challenging in ways we could never have imagined, we have also been provided with exceptional opportunity for growth in ways we also never imagined. For example, the birth of our corporate program. Our corporate program is an incredibly fulfilling venture for us that would not likely have evolved without the pandemic. Over the past two years, we never stopped teaching, although we were sometimes online, we were always present with our clients. We had a unique perspective that allowed us to anticipate corporate America’s “return to work” and prepare for it. This perspective gave us an intimate view of how different companies managed this unforeseen territory. We got to see a range of corporate strategies. We got to see what worked and what didn’t.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Physical Culture?
Physical Culture is a structural integration studio. As we mentioned earlier, we define physical culture as the improvement of the mind through education and study of the body, and our studio reflects this. We use many different tools to help our clients move and feel better including pilates, Red Cord, manual work, kettlebell, vibrational sound therapies, meditation, Wim Hof based breathwork, and infrared light therapy. Our unique process begins with simple postural and movement assessments to determine what major feature postural feature, which, if corrected, could have the greatest positive downstream effect on the mind and body. These 8 to 10 corrective sessions usually involve a combination of the different modalities that we use in the studio and is unique to each individual. After the corrective sessions, our clients move toward a maintenance program, usually in semi-private sessions, where we continue to address their individual needs. We believe that each of our clients’ journey is collectively our project, and we are regularly making adjustments to suit the goals that we are working toward.
What is currently very exciting for us is that we have the opportunity to bring this philosophy to corporate teams coming back to a more traditional work environment. Just as covid has presented a “new normal”, the corporate team building experience can have a fresh new approach. Our Corporate Culture and Integrative Keynote Experiences have not only been fulfilling for us but have been extremely well received with very encouraging feedback.
