Hidden Gems: Meet Shari Moody of Shari Moody Tutoring, LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shari Moody.

Hi Shari, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I started Shari Moody Tutoring out of a genuine love for helping students build confidence in reading and math. Early in my career, I began working one-on-one with students who needed more individualized support than they were receiving in the classroom. I quickly realized that tutoring wasn’t just about improving grades—it was about helping students believe they were capable.
As word spread, my schedule filled up. Families appreciated the personalized approach, consistent communication, and the way I partnered with teachers to make sure we were reinforcing classroom goals. When I reached capacity, I saw an opportunity not just to grow, but to serve more students well. That’s when I began building a team.

Today, I lead a group of highly qualified tutors for grades K-College including Orton-Gillingham–trained instructors, who specialize in reading and math intervention. I carefully match tutors with students, stay involved behind the scenes, and maintain communication with families and schools to ensure consistency and progress. While the company has grown, my mission has stayed the same: provide high-quality, relationship-based tutoring that strengthens both academic skills and student confidence.
What began as one-on-one sessions has grown into a collaborative tutoring team, but the heart of the work is still the same—meeting students where they are and helping them move forward.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been a completely smooth road — but the challenges have shaped the business into what it is today.
When I first started Shari Moody Tutoring, LLC, had a team of four tutors and myself. I was doing everything myself — tutoring, scheduling, communicating with parents, invoicing, coordinating with schools, and managing materials. Balancing all of that while maintaining high-quality instruction was overwhelming at times. There were seasons where my schedule was completely full, and I had to turn families away, which was hard because I truly wanted to help every child. I still do all the scheduling, invoicing, payroll, etc. but it has gotten easier.
Growing from a solo tutor into a team-based company brought a different set of challenges. Finding tutors who not only have strong credentials (like Orton-Gillingham training) but also align with my values — reliability, communication, warmth, and professionalism — took time. Training, onboarding, and making sure every family still received the same level of care and consistency required systems I had to build from scratch.
There were also normal business learning curves: setting clear policies, managing cancellations, handling transitions when students move or graduate, and navigating the natural ups and downs of enrollment throughout the school year.
But each challenge pushed me to become more organized, more intentional, and more confident as a business owner. The growing pains helped me create better structures, clearer communication, and a stronger team. Looking back, I wouldn’t call it easy — but I would call it worth it.
